Three organizations. Three very different ways of helping neighbors. And one Nonprofit of the Year award waiting to be announced in November.
The 2026 Heroes of Vista finalists are Boys & Girls Club of Vista, Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank and Solutions for Change. The Vista Chamber of Commerce will announce the winner at its November 6 gala.
But there's a good reason to get to know all three before the envelope opens: their work touches local families every day. Read More... |

A missed call can be ordinary. For someone enrolled in You Are Not Alone, it can also be the signal that a neighbor needs help. Sheriff’s volunteers make weekday calls, and three unanswered attempts trigger a home check.
Vista and San Marcos residents can ask their local station about this free service and separate vacation-home checks. Behind the work are trained volunteers age 50 and older who commit at least six hours a week to helping their communities.
Learn how the checks work, where to ask about enrollment and what it takes to join the volunteer patrol. Read More... |
A regular reading appointment can give a child another patient adult in their corner. Vista’s Reading Pals recruitment invites volunteers to help elementary students strengthen their English reading skills through one-on-one afterschool support.
North County Outreach Initiative lists tutoring opportunities Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 2:35 and 4:35 p.m., with placement details depending on the school. Reading Pals’ general model provides a curriculum, orientation and coordinator support, so volunteers have a structure to follow.
See what to ask before signing up—including your school assignment, weekly commitment and the grade range served—and how to make room for a reading appointment you can keep. Read More... |

An editorial neighborhood spotlight |

Some Vista landmarks are best recognized by a giant ice cream cone. Pepper Tree Frosty is one of them. This family-run neighborhood stop has been part of Vista’s story since 1953. Burgers, shakes and frozen treats give neighbors plenty of reasons to pause at the walk-up windows—and the familiar storefront is part of the pleasure. Make it a simple local outing: bring someone who remembers it, or introduce someone who has never stopped. Check the shop’s current hours before heading over. |

Let the farmer’s advice guide your pick, then round out your bag with something for dinner. The market’s foodmakers also offer sauces, dips, salsas and locally made treats.
