San Marcos Sports Roundup: Knights Win Discovery Bowl Thriller |
A 27–26 varsity flag football rivalry victory leads a week of close matchups, JV success and field hockey shutouts |
The Discovery Bowl delivered the kind of finish that makes a local rivalry memorable: San Marcos High edged Mission Hills by a single point in girls varsity flag football. The same week also brought a Grizzlies JV rivalry win, two field hockey shutouts and a one-goal boys water polo matchup between the schools.
Knights Take Discovery Bowl Thriller, 27–26
San Marcos High defeated Mission Hills 27–26 in girls varsity flag football on Wednesday, October 7, taking a one-point victory over its San Marcos neighbor.
The final score, reported by Prep Pigskin Report and confirmed in MaxPreps' game recap, capped a close rivalry contest. San Marcos extended its winning streak to 10 games and improved to 17–1, while Mission Hills moved to 11–4.
Mission Hills defender Samarie Navarro also earned individual recognition, with MaxPreps crediting her with five sacks. Even in a one-point defeat, that defensive performance deserves attention.
The schools split the spotlight across levels: Mission Hills won the separate JV flag football game 26–19. The varsity and JV scores should not be confused, and both programs came away with something to celebrate.
Mission Hills Edges Knights in Boys Water Polo
Just days before the flag football showdown, Mission Hills boys water polo defeated San Marcos 10–9 on October 1. This time the Grizzlies prevailed in another one-goal matchup between the neighboring schools.
Mission Hills followed with a 10–3 win over El Camino on October 6. San Marcos also faced Ramona that day, falling 13–6.
Two different sports, two one-point or one-goal rivalry finishes and a victory for each school: that was a distinctive feature of this week's local schedule.
Grizzlies Field Hockey Puts Up Twelve
Mission Hills varsity field hockey defeated Escondido 12–0 on October 7, combining a high-scoring offensive performance with a shutout.
Earlier, the Grizzlies played Westview to a 1–1 tie on October 5. Those two results show the range of challenges the program faced during the week, from a closely contested draw to a commanding victory.
Knights Field Hockey Adds Another Shutout
San Marcos High varsity field hockey also finished a game without allowing a goal, defeating Mt. Carmel 2–0 on October 6.
With both San Marcos schools recording shutouts, field hockey gave the community two additional winning results beyond the high-profile rivalry games.
San Marcos Volleyball Sweeps Carlsbad
The Knights' girls volleyball team beat Carlsbad 3–0 on October 1, winning 25–19, 25–19 and 25–18. San Marcos held the opponent below 20 points in every set.
The Knights then faced Torrey Pines on October 6, falling 3–0. Both matches form part of the week's varsity schedule.

Twelve goals against Escondido is a lot. Does anyone know if the Grizzlies have scored that many before?
Five sacks for Samarie Navarro and Mission Hills still lost by one point. That has to sting.
Ten wins in a row for the Knights is pretty impressive, especially after a game that close.
