Rancho Buena Vista picked up its first victory of the season with an impressive 35-14 road win over Sweetwater, powered by a ground game that piled up 228 yards.

Across town, Vista High welcomed Olympian for its home opener. The varsity Panthers fell 33-20, while Vista's JV squad dropped its matchup 33-7.

The results weren't all what the hometown crowd wanted, but there's plenty of football left — and we're getting a much better look at the players behind the scores.

RBV's Offense Gets Rolling

One week after opening with a 23-14 loss at Otay Ranch, Rancho Buena Vista responded in a big way.

Quarterback Van Piercy completed 7 of 14 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried the ball five times for 29 yards and another score, accounting for three touchdowns on the night.

Kaipo Gutierrez carried 11 times for 77 yards and two touchdowns, while Ean Perfect led the Longhorns on the ground with 106 yards on 13 carries.

Altogether, RBV rushed for 228 yards.

Through the air, Isaiah Simmons caught three passes for 78 yards and a touchdown. Zachariah Pohto turned his lone reception into a 20-yard touchdown.

That's five offensive touchdowns spread among Piercy, Gutierrez, Simmons and Pohto.

There's also an interesting connection between the two Vista schools' first two weeks.

Sweetwater defeated Vista High by just one point, 47-46, in the Panthers' season opener. One week later, Rancho Buena Vista faced that same Sweetwater team and held the Red Devils to just 14 points in a 35-14 Longhorns victory.

RBV improves to 1-1 and travels to San Pasqual on Friday, Sept. 4.

Vista Comes Home Against Olympian

Vista's home opener didn't produce the Panthers' first varsity victory, but it gave local fans their first chance this season to see the team on its own field.

Olympian defeated Vista 33-20, dropping the Panthers to 0-2 after that wild one-point loss at Sweetwater the previous week.

What we do have is something even better for our coverage going forward: photos and video coming directly from Vista High games through local contributor Eduardo Javier Aguilar.

That means we'll be able to show more of the actual Panthers taking the field instead of simply telling you what happened.

JV Panthers Get Their Friday Too

Varsity gets most of the headlines, but it isn't the only football happening at Vista High.

The Panthers' JV team also faced Olympian, falling 33-7.

We're going to make an effort this season to include JV results when we have reliable scores, photos or other information available.

That's particularly meaningful when local families are helping us document the games. Eduardo's son, Eduardo Aguilar Jr. — No. 36 — is among the Panthers competing at the JV level.

For parents, grandparents and everyone else filling those stands, those games matter too.

So when we have reliable JV information, they'll have a place here.

What's Next for Vista Football

Vista High heads back on the road Friday, Sept. 4, to face Madison at 7 p.m.

Rancho Buena Vista travels to San Pasqual the same night, also for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Neither Week 2 result affected the Valley League standings, so there's still plenty of football ahead before the games carrying league consequences arrive.

RBV has its first win.

Vista is still hunting for its first.
