The Grizzlies claim the crosstown rivalry game as both schools close the regular season and await CIF playoff selections. |
Mission Hills took home the Discovery Bowl trophy Friday night while celebrating Senior Night. They beat the San Marcos Knights 42–28 in the 23rd meeting of the crosstown rivals.
They also took home the big check from the fundraising challenge, giving the Grizzlies plenty to celebrate.
But this rivalry has a history that goes back much further than one Friday night.
Two Schools, One Discovery Bowl
It started in 2004, when Mission Hills opened and San Marcos became a two-high-school football town. The Discovery Bowl gave the Grizzlies and Knights a game of their own, and the rivalry has been part of the local football calendar ever since.
Twenty-three meetings later, there's plenty of history between the programs. Mission Hills has won more often over the years, but each new class of players gets its own shot at the trophy.
Mission Hills came into Friday's matchup celebrating Senior Night on its home field, with the Discovery Bowl trophy on the line. |
Mission Hills Takes the Trophy
The Grizzlies scored 42 points and held off San Marcos for a 42–28 victory. The Knights put up 28 of their own, but couldn't close the gap.
When the game ended, the Discovery Bowl trophy stayed with Mission Hills. For the seniors, it meant finishing their regular-season home schedule with a win over the school across town.
And the football trophy wasn't the only prize Mission Hills had to celebrate that week. |
The Rivalry Didn't Stop at the Final Whistle
Mission Hills and San Marcos High took their competition beyond the football field with the Chick-fil-A fundraising challenge. Students and supporters had another way to back their schools during rivalry week.
Mission Hills won that contest, too. Along with the Discovery Bowl trophy, the Grizzlies had the fundraising challenge's big check to celebrate.
The video below shows the celebration and another side of a rivalry that reaches beyond Friday night's final score. |

What's Next for the Grizzlies and Knights?
The Discovery Bowl trophy belongs to Mission Hills for another year, but the Grizzlies have their sights set on more football. The 42–28 win gave their seniors a rivalry victory on their home field, along with another reason to celebrate after the Chick-fil-A fundraising challenge.
For the Grizzlies, the focus now shifts to the postseason. They'll find out where they stand when the CIF San Diego Section releases its official playoff brackets Sunday, November 1, including seedings, opponents and game dates.
For the Knights, last week's spectacular drone show was still fresh in their minds heading into the Discovery Bowl. Their sky-high Senior Night celebration gave San Marcos High a memorable finish to its home schedule, even though Friday's rivalry trophy went to Mission Hills.
Now San Marcos High will be watching Sunday's playoff announcement, too. The next chapter for both teams depends on the official brackets. |

I didn’t realize the Discovery Bowl started when Mission Hills opened in 2004. Wonder if the Knights take it back next year!
What a Senior Night for Mission Hills! A 42-28 win and the fundraising check too. Congrats, Grizzlies!
