This past week, Vista and San Marcos residents experienced something beyond a typical Southern California summer — oppressive heat paired with unusual humidity that made even short outdoor trips feel exhausting. This upcoming week is expected to be more of the same.
Unlike the region's familiar dry heat, elevated humidity slows the body's natural cooling process, meaning an 88-degree humid day can feel worse than a dry 95-degree one.
If another heat wave hits, both cities offer free cooling locations. Vista residents can head to the Gloria McClellan Senior Center on Vale Terrace Drive or the Vista Library on Eucalyptus Avenue. In San Marcos, the San Marcos Library at Civic Center Drive is a designated cooling site, and Las Posas Park Pool offers a refreshing swim option.
Experts urge residents to drink water before feeling thirsty, avoid outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and never leave children or pets in parked cars. Those needing transportation assistance can call 2-1-1 for help reaching cooling resources. Read More... |
Big Improvements Coming to One of San Marcos' Busiest Roads
A major improvement project along San Marcos Boulevard is designed to improve traffic flow, enhance pedestrian safety, and prepare one of the city's busiest corridors for the future.
If you've driven along San Marcos Boulevard between Rancho Santa Fe Road and Knights Realm recently, you've likely noticed construction crews, traffic cones, and occasional lane shifts. While the work may add a few extra minutes to your commute this summer, city officials say the project is focused on making one of San Marcos' busiest roadways safer and more efficient for years to come.
Construction began in mid-June on a roadway improvement project along this heavily traveled stretch of San Marcos Boulevard. The corridor serves thousands of drivers each day and connects neighborhoods, schools, restaurants, shopping centers, and local businesses, making it one of the city's most important transportation routes. For many families, the cost of college can feel like one of the biggest obstacles after high school. Palomar College is taking a significant step to ease that burden by dramatically expanding its Palomar Promise Program, giving thousands more students the opportunity to attend college tuition-free while receiving additional academic support.
Beginning with the 2026–2027 academic year, Palomar College will increase the program from serving approximately 1,700 students to as many as 3,500 students, making it the largest expansion in the program's history. College leaders say the move is designed to remove financial barriers that have prevented many eligible students from participating in previous years because demand exceeded available funding.
The expansion is being made possible through a one-time $3.8 million investment from redevelopment agency funds received by the Palomar Community College District. The evening runs from late afternoon into night, pairing natural wines with live DJ performances in a breezy indoor-outdoor atmosphere.
