Vista has room for Vikings, axes, stones and more than nine musical acts.
Cars, however, did not make the guest list.
The 24th Vista Viking Festival runs Sept. 19–20 at the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum, 2040 N. Santa Fe Ave. Hours are 10 a.m.–8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Sunday.
The headline attraction may be Norse culture. The first challenge is getting there without angering the parking gods.
Choose Your Parking Camp
Festival organizers currently direct ordinary guests to park at Vista High School, 1 Panther Way, or Mission Vista High School, 1306 Melrose Drive in Oceanside.
Parking costs $10, cash only, and includes shuttle service. The lots open at 8 a.m.; shuttles begin at 9 a.m. ADA-accessible transportation is available.
Coming from Interstate 15 or points east?
Organizers recommend Vista High. Arriving from Interstate 5 or the west? Mission Vista is the suggested option.
The festival website contains older information about paid parking at the museum, but its current homepage, hours page and final parking notice say no on-site guest parking will be available because of construction.
Translation: trust the latest notice, not the paragraph wandering around the website in a horned helmet.
This Is Not a Tiny Encampment
Norway Hall Foundation’s 2024 federal tax filing reports 11,118 attendees at that year’s two-day festival. The organization identifies the festival as its principal annual event and reported approximately $249,000 in related program-service expenses.
Those numbers are self-reported, but they put the weekend’s scale into perspective. This is not three folding tables and somebody’s uncle wearing a cape.
The 2026 festival includes two music stages, Viking encampments and demonstrations of blacksmithing, metalworking and fabric arts. Heritage displays are scheduled to feature weaving, spinning, knitting, woodcarving and rosemaling, the Norwegian decorative painting tradition.
Visitors can also find archery, axe throwing and spear throwing. Each activity costs six activity tickets, and closed-toe shoes are required.
Apparently, sandals and flying weapons remain a poor historical pairing.
Loki Has Entered the Schedule
Organizers have named 2026 the “Year of Loki,” a fitting theme for a weekend featuring controlled chaos, competitive yelling and objects traveling through the air.
Public competitions include the Viking Log Toss, beard contest, battle cry and fish fling.
The scheduled All American Stones of Strength championships run from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. Saturday for men and the same hours Sunday for women.
The festival promotes 2026 as its first year hosting an International Highland Games Federation competition. However, a participant documented an IHGF-branded Stones of Strength event at the Vista festival in 2023.
The exact distinction between that contest and this year’s event remains unclear, so “first ever” deserves a cautious eyebrow raise.

Love the sound of all the crafts and music. Too bad about no pets though, my dog would make a great Viking!
I think it’s kind of weird they say it’s the first IHGF contest if they already did one. Still love the festival, but just say what it is!
Is axe throwing open to kids too or just adults? My son would love to try but want to make sure before we buy tickets.

Wendy H.Yeah, it caught me off guard last year. Luckily the shuttle wasn’t too bad once I found the right lot. I guess construction has made things trickier this time.
Went to this a couple years ago, the shuttles were packed! Pro tip, get there early if you want a seat. Looking forward to the beard contest again.
