There is probably a roll of quarters in your car.

Or enough loose change under the seat to start one.

Vista’s QuarterMania fundraiser would like you to find it.

The maximum bid on an auction item is three quarters. That is 75 cents, which sounds like a shopping trip from another century.

Hold that thought.

Admission costs $30. Guests supply their own quarters to bid. And placing a bid gives you a chance to win an item, not a receipt for one.

So the low bids make for a fun hook. The reason for the fundraiser sits beyond the auction table.

In March, Soroptimist International of Vista and North County Inland reported giving $15,000 in education and training awards to 12 local women.

Those awards came before this event. October’s quarters did not pay for March’s awards.

The club does say its fundraisers help make the Live Your Dream Awards possible. That gives the paddle a purpose beyond winning something to take home.

The QuarterMania Plan

The fundraiser is scheduled for Sunday, October 4, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Gloria McClellan Senior Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive in Vista.

Doors open at 11 for check-in and lunch.

The $30 ticket includes a bidding paddle, poker chip, light lunch and nonalcoholic drinks. Guests who want to bid are asked to bring a roll of quarters.

Think of it as two parts of the budget: admission first, then however many bids you choose to make.

The organizer also advertises raffle prizes and shopping with up to 10 vendors.

“Up to” is important.

The final number of vendors has not been published. The notice does not say whether raffle entries cost extra, either.

So do not mistake the three-quarter maximum bid for the total cost of an afternoon out. That number applies to one auction item.

What the Fundraiser Supports

The club says proceeds support women’s and girls’ education and empowerment, along with human-trafficking awareness.

It has not published a fundraising target for October or a breakdown of how this event’s net proceeds will be divided.

What it has reported is that $15,000 in education and training awards went to 12 local women in March.

That is a past result, not a prediction for QuarterMania.

It is also a more useful picture of the club’s work than the phrase “good cause” could ever provide. The bids may be small. The reason people are gathering in Vista is bigger.

Check Before You Go

The event notice requests RSVPs by September 26. It says a limited number of tickets will be available at the door.

Limited is not the word you want to discover after arriving with a pocket full of quarters. Check availability if you plan to walk in.

Then bring the change.

For once, the coins rolling around in your car have an appointment.
