As of Monday, August 24, Vista is temporarily closing the four bocce ball courts at Brengle Terrace Park for a renovation project expected to last about five weeks.

And when they reopen? They should be looking considerably sharper.

A Fresh Roll for All Four Courts

The City of Vista says the project will include new wood surrounds on all four courts and a refreshed oystershell playing surface.

That might not sound like the flashiest construction project happening around town, but if you actually play bocce, the condition of that surface matters.

During construction, some nearby parking areas may also be temporarily unavailable so crews can move equipment and vehicles in and out.

The city hasn't announced an exact reopening date, so don't circle one on the calendar just yet. The current estimate is approximately five weeks.

These Courts Have a Story

Here's the part that makes this more than a routine park maintenance project.

Vista's bocce courts have ties to the city's Italian-American community.

The American Italian Club of Vista has said its members donated and hand-built the courts years ago, creating a place where the traditional Italian game could continue to be played — and shared — right here in Vista.

The club has continued that tradition through bocce events and tournaments at Brengle Terrace Park.

In other words, these aren't just four rectangles tucked into a city park. They've become a small piece of Vista's community history.

Brengle Keeps Getting Better

The courts sit inside Brengle Terrace Park at 1200 Vale Terrace Drive, one of Vista's biggest recreation and cultural hubs.

Between the Moonlight Amphitheatre, Alta Vista Botanical Gardens, sports facilities, playgrounds, picnic areas and other amenities, there's a whole lot happening on that hill.

And bocce isn't disappearing from the picture.

The existing courts are also identified in Vista's current concept planning for Brengle Terrace Park, making this renovation a nice investment in something residents are already using.

So for Vista's bocce crowd, consider this a temporary timeout.
