Vista’s fall girls volleyball program has already started, but the City says students in grades 5–8 can still join.

That’s the good news.

The stranger news is sitting inside the City’s scholarship system, where two official pages give families two different application deadlines.

Apparently, the first opponent of the season is the calendar.

Six Divisions, One Gym

Vista’s program combines volleyball instruction with league play. It is designed for players of all ability levels, including beginners still learning which direction the rotation goes.

Practices and games are held at Brengle Terrace Gymnasium inside the Jim Porter Recreation Center, 1200 Vale Terrace.

Grades 5–6 meet Mondays and Wednesdays through Nov. 18. No session is scheduled for Nov. 11.

Grades 7–8 meet Tuesdays and Thursdays through Nov. 19.

Each grade group has three one-hour divisions:

• 4 to 5 p.m.

• 5 to 6 p.m.

• 6 to 7 p.m.

Registration costs $130 for Vista residents and $156 for nonresidents.

As of Aug. 29, all six City registration listings displayed “Register Now.”

That indicates registration remains available online. It does not tell families how many openings remain in each division.

The City has not published enrollment totals, session capacities or a breakdown showing which time slots have the most room.

“Spots are open” is helpful.

“Here are the spots” would be even better.

The City also has not posted a prorated fee for players joining after the season began.

 Families should confirm the current price and availability before registering.

Then Comes the Scholarship Puzzle

Vista offers recreation scholarships intended to help qualifying City residents under age 25 participate in activities they otherwise might not be able to afford.

But the City’s two scholarship pages are not playing on the same court.

One City notice says funding restrictions forced the scholarship program to stop accepting applications after 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 7. It says later submissions will be withdrawn and the next application period opens Oct. 1.

The separate City scholarship portal still lists the original application window as July 1 through Aug. 31.

Both dates remained posted on Aug. 29.

Families should not assume the later deadline means funding is still available. The safest move is to contact scholarship staff at 760-643-5324 or Scholarships@vista.gov before submitting anything.

Vista has offered youth volleyball for years, with online recreation records dating back to at least 2019.

The volleyball program is straightforward.

The scholarship calendar could use a cleaner set.
