Vista is barely out of summer and already being asked to think peppermint.

The Vista Chamber of Commerce has opened registration for the 68th Annual Vista Christmas Parade, scheduled for Saturday, December 5 at 1 p.m. in Downtown Vista.

This year’s theme is “Candyland Dream,” which means floats, walking groups, businesses, bands and community organizations now have a perfectly reasonable excuse to start thinking in gumdrops, candy canes, gingerbread and aggressively festive sugar architecture.

Someone in Vista is about to hot-glue a lollipop the size of a stop sign.

Yes, Registration Is Already Open

The Chamber’s announcement says registrations are now open for participants who want to be part of the parade.

That early notice matters.

Parade entries do not magically appear on Main Street fully decorated, synchronized and ready to wave.

Someone has to build the float.

Someone has to find the extension cords.

Someone has to explain, again, why glitter is now banned from the garage.

Businesses and community groups are invited to join the parade, and the Chamber’s signature-events page notes that Christmas Parade floats are judged in three categories: Best Use of Theme, Best Spirit and Best Overall.

Winners are announced at the Chamber’s January Business Mixer, giving everyone a full month to recover from whatever happened with the tinsel.

The Vista Christmas Parade is not a new little holiday experiment.

Downtown Vista describes it as one of the longest-running holiday parades in San Diego County, with a new theme each year and a route through the city’s historic downtown.

The Chamber says the parade takes place on the first Saturday of December and is built around bringing the community together to kick off the holiday season.

That tracks.

For a lot of Vista families, the parade is one of those annual events that turns “we should do something festive” into an actual plan.

You show up downtown.

You find a curb.

You wave at people you may or may not know.

That is the less sparkly part of a parade, but it is also the part that keeps the whole thing from becoming three wagons and a Bluetooth speaker.

Community events need volunteers, sponsors, city coordination, participants, staging, cleanup and the mysterious civic art of getting everyone pointed the same direction at the same time.

Santa gets the applause.
