Vista has one of those cleanup jobs where the word “coastal” does not mean what people think it means.

No sand required.

No surfboard in the background.

No dramatic staring at the Pacific while holding a trash grabber.

On Saturday, September 19, Vista volunteers can join I Love A Clean San Diego’s 42nd Annual Coastal Cleanup Day at Buena Vista Creek Trail, where City of Vista staff and residents will help remove trash before it has a chance to move through local waterways.

The cleanup runs from 9 a.m. to noon.

Registration is appreciated, though the city says it is not required.

In other words: yes, you can still show up and be useful.

Why Vista Has a “Coastal” Cleanup

The name can be a little misleading if you picture only beaches.

Coastal Cleanup Day includes creeks, rivers, trails, parks, canyons and neighborhoods because trash does not need a beach chair to become an ocean problem.

Water carries things.

So does wind.

So does the slow, annoying migration of bottles, wrappers, cups and mystery plastic that somehow ends up where nobody remembers putting it.

That is why Vista’s cleanup is happening at Buena Vista Creek Trail, not the shoreline. The city describes the trail as a short, casual route off Hacienda Drive, across from the BMW dealership, with wide pathways along a densely packed biological preserve.

Translation: a pretty easy place to walk, and a pretty good place to keep trash out.

This Is Bigger Than One Trail

I Love A Clean San Diego is organizing the countywide effort, with cleanup locations across San Diego County.

The organization says Coastal Cleanup Day has removed more than 5 million pounds of litter and debris since 1985, with more than 269,000 volunteers taking part over the years.

This year’s event is also part of the larger International Coastal Cleanup, with data from California sites reported through the California Coastal Commission into a global marine-debris database.

That sounds very official.

It also means the cup someone picks up in Vista may become a tiny data point in a much bigger picture of what is ending up in waterways.

Not glamorous.

Useful.

What Volunteers Should Know

The Vista cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, from 9 a.m. to noon at Buena Vista Creek Trail.

City staff and community volunteers are expected to help remove pollution from the area.

I Love A Clean San Diego says volunteers can choose from sites throughout the county, including locations that are family-friendly, accessible to Spanish-speaking communities, convenient for public transit, wheelchair accessible or considered high-need.

For anyone staying local, the Vista site is the obvious choice.

Wear closed-toe shoes. Bring sun protection. A reusable water bottle is a good idea. Gloves and a bucket from home can also help cut down on disposable cleanup supplies.

Basically, dress like you are about to do light outdoor work, because that is exactly what this is.

The Three-Hour Ask

Three hours is not much.

It is one youth soccer game. One long grocery run. One “quick” trip to Costco that somehow becomes a character test.

But three hours along a creek trail can make a visible difference.

And in a city that keeps talking about trails, habitat, neighborhoods and civic pride, this is the part where the civic pride comes with a trash bag.

Not fancy.
