The College Class Hiding Inside San Marcos Library Still Has Room |
Palomar’s adult English course has already started—but open enrollment means late arrivals may still have a shot. |
Most college classes make students hunt for them.
This one came to the library.
Palomar College is holding a beginning-level English course inside the San Marcos Library, putting adult education in a familiar community building instead of somewhere beyond a campus map, a parking lot and three wrong turns.
The class started in August and continues through Dec. 17.
But the enrollment door has not slammed shut.
Palomar’s live schedule showed six of the class’s 25 seats available on Sept. 10.
In college-registration language, the course is “Open.”
In everyday English: Starting late may still be possible.
The Class Behind the Announcement
The official title is Basic ESL Skills, or N ESL 972.
It is Section 7, class number 73700, taught by Caryn Curran. Palomar identifies it as a noncredit, open-enrollment course.
Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at the San Marcos Library, 2 Civic Center Drive. Palomar lists the time as noon to 2:20 p.m.
The library’s calendar says noon to 2:15 p.m.
That five-minute disagreement probably will not bring academia crashing down before lunch. Still, students should confirm the ending time when registering.
Palomar’s term record begins Aug. 24.
Because the class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, its first scheduled meeting was Tuesday, Aug. 25.
The course runs through Thursday, Dec. 17.
One date comes with a wrinkle: The library will be closed for Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26. Public listings do not explain how Palomar will handle that meeting.
English Without the Campus Expedition
N ESL 972 belongs to Palomar’s beginning noncredit English as a Second Language sequence.
Palomar says its broader beginning ESL program develops listening, speaking, reading and writing skills for people preparing for employment or future college classes.
Those are program goals.
They are not a promise that one course will instantly polish a résumé or convince English grammar to stop making exceptions to its exceptions.
Let’s keep our expectations somewhere below sorcery.
The location is the more interesting local story.
San Marcos Library is a public, ADA-accessible community space with Wi-Fi. Holding the course there brings a college classroom directly into a place many residents already know.
This is not the branch’s first recent Palomar English class. The library also promoted an adult course held Tuesdays and Thursdays from Feb. 24 through May 21, 2026.
The fall session puts another college learning opportunity inside the community rather than waiting for the community to find the college.

The library advertises the course as a free English class for adults. Palomar lists it as noncredit, although prospective students should confirm whether any separate college-related fees apply to them.
