Football may own Friday nights, but San Marcos athletes aren't waiting around for the stadium lights to get some attention.

North Valley Flare is launching our San Marcos Sports Roundup, where we'll follow the action beyond traditional football at San Marcos High and Mission Hills.

And there is already plenty to talk about.

Starting with a Knights flag football team that apparently forgot the season was supposed to have a warm-up period.

Knights Flag Football Starts 3–0 — And It's Not Particularly Close

San Marcos High girls flag football has opened the season 3–0, defeating Clairemont 48–6, Imperial 43–0 and Dana Hills 44–0.

Do the math and that's 135 points scored against just six allowed through the first three games.

And there are names behind those numbers.

Junior Miyah Holmes is averaging 115.7 receiving yards per game and has seven touchdowns through the first three games. Junior Finlee Hovis is averaging 45.7 rushing yards per game, while senior Sam Shelton is averaging four flag pulls per game.

Freshman Stella Reynolds has already recorded two sacks.

Holmes and Hovis have each earned Player of the Game recognition early this season.

Three games. Three wins.

Safe to say the Knights have our attention.

Mission Hills Is Unbeaten, Too

Across town, Mission Hills girls flag football is doing some winning of its own.

The Grizzlies defeated Steele Canyon 13–6 Thursday, giving Mission Hills its second consecutive victory and a 2–0 start to the season.

That means San Marcos currently has two undefeated girls flag football programs.

And yes, we're going to be keeping a very close eye on both of them — especially with the Knights and Grizzlies scheduled to meet later this season.

San Marcos Volleyball Opens With a Sweep

The Knights also started things nicely inside the gym.

San Marcos girls volleyball defeated Otay Ranch 3–0 Wednesday in its home opener.

The Knights won the sets 25–22, 25–17 and 25–16, getting stronger as the match went along.

It's early, but that's certainly one way to introduce yourself to the home crowd.

The San Marcos Sports Roundup won't be another football recap. We're covering football separately.

Instead, we'll be watching the other fall sports at San Marcos High and Mission Hills, including volleyball, girls flag football, field hockey, cross country, girls golf, girls tennis and boys water polo.
