San Marcos Sports Roundup: Knights Move to 6–0 as Grizzlies Keep Their Perfect Start |
Flag football stays perfect, volleyball heads to Hawai‘i, and San Marcos athletes keep giving us plenty to talk about. |
San Marcos girls flag football finally got a fight.
After rolling through the opening weeks of the season, the Knights faced their closest game yet Wednesday — and still found a way to win.
Meanwhile, Mission Hills has a perfect flag football start of its own, and San Marcos volleyball has traded San Diego for the Big Island.
The Knights Get Their Toughest Test — And Win Anyway
San Marcos High girls flag football defeated Classical Academy 34–27 on Sept. 2, improving to a perfect 6–0.
It was quite a change from the Knights' first five games, which included three shutouts and several lopsided victories.
This time, San Marcos had to finish a close one.
And there are plenty of local names behind that undefeated start.
Junior Miyah Holmes is averaging 119.6 receiving yards per game and has 12 total touchdowns.
Junior Finlee Hovis is averaging 58 rushing yards per game, while senior Sam Shelton is averaging six flag pulls per game.
Junior Danielle Ekereke has also been making life difficult for opposing offenses, recording six flag pulls for loss and three sacks.
Six games. Six wins.
And now we know the Knights can win the close ones, too.
Mission Hills Is Perfect, Too
Across town, Mission Hills girls flag football has put together an undefeated start of its own.
The Grizzlies improved to 3–0 with a 27–19 victory over Granite Hills on Aug. 28.
And the Mission Hills defense came up with some big plays.
Tatem Tinoisamoa and Maegan Budge each recorded an interception in the victory.
That's the kind of individual recognition we're looking for in these roundups — the names behind the final score.
With both San Marcos programs opening the season unbeaten, girls flag football has quickly become one of the city's most interesting fall sports stories.
A Bigger Flag Football Stage Is Coming
The spotlight is about to get considerably brighter.
Both San Marcos and Mission Hills are scheduled to participate in the MaxPreps Flag Football Showdown Sept. 11–12, an event bringing together high-level programs for two days of competition.
For two local teams that have already made plenty of noise to start the season, it should provide an interesting measuring stick.
And yes, we'll be watching.
San Marcos Volleyball Heads to the Big Island
The Knights are getting a considerably better road trip than most high school teams this week.
San Marcos girls volleyball has traded San Diego for Hilo, Hawai‘i, where the Knights are competing in the Hawai‘i Island Labor Day Classic Sept. 3–5.
The Knights entered the trip after a busy opening stretch that included wins over Otay Ranch, Patrick Henry, Rancho Buena Vista, Temecula Valley, La Costa Canyon and Scripps Ranch.
We'll wait until the tournament is complete before turning partial results into a story, but this one already has a spot on our list for next week's roundup.
High school volleyball on the Big Island?
We suspect the kids aren't complaining.
