The city's two public high school programs opened the 2026 season Friday night with two wins, 70 combined points scored and just 10 allowed.
San Marcos beat Aliso Niguel 23–7.
Mission Hills overwhelmed El Camino 47–3.
That's one way to introduce yourself to a new season.
Knights Win on the Road
San Marcos High didn't get the luxury of starting the season in front of its home crowd.
The Knights traveled to Aliso Niguel and came home with a 23–7 victory, moving to 1–0.
The win also continued a successful stretch away from home. According to MaxPreps, San Marcos has now won three consecutive road games dating back to last season.
And the Knights aren't coming home just yet.
They'll be back on the road next Friday.
Mission Hills Turns Its Opener Into a Rout
Mission Hills had considerably less suspense in its season opener.
The Grizzlies defeated El Camino 47–3 at home.
Mission Hills had already built a 27–3 halftime lead before shutting El Camino out during the second half.
The victory moved the Grizzlies to 1–0 and extended their home winning streak to five games dating back to last season.
Forty-seven points scored.
Three allowed.
That's about as comfortable an opening night as a team can ask for.
Two More Tests Coming Friday
San Marcos travels to face Great Oak at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28.
Mission Hills stays home, where the Grizzlies will host Quartz Hill at 7 p.m.
There is plenty of football still to be played, and one weekend certainly doesn't tell us how an entire season will unfold.
But this much we know:
San Marcos and Mission Hills both started 1–0.
Together they outscored their opening opponents 70–10.
For San Marcos football fans, that's a pretty good first Friday.
