That ship has sailed.
Technically, it was probably a van.
Want to walk into Petco Sunday and meet the dogs that make the trip?
Now we’re talking.
Amazing Dogs Rescue is holding a puppy and dog adoption event Sunday, Sept. 6, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Petco, 141 South Las Posas Road in San Marcos.
Walk-ins are welcome. Nobody is obligated to adopt.
Because choosing a new roommate should involve more consideration than choosing a squeaky chicken from aisle seven.
“Reserve” Is Not “Add to Cart”
Amazing Dogs Rescue organizes weekly events at 12 locations across California, Nevada and Arizona.
Prospective adopters can normally browse the rescue’s online directory and request a particular dog for a nearby event.
There are a few steps between “look at that face” and “bring that face to San Marcos.”
The process requires an application, the rescue’s approval and a $50 nonrefundable deposit.
If the adoption goes forward, the deposit is applied to the adoption fee. If it does not—or the applicant misses the event—the rescue says the money helps cover transportation.
The organization’s calendar says preferred dogs must be reserved before 10 a.m. Friday.
That published deadline has passed for Sunday’s event.
Walk-ins can still meet the dogs that arrive. However, the rescue warns that only reserved dogs are guaranteed to appear.

Puppy Eyes Skip the Fine Print
Adoption fees vary by dog and start at $250.
Current profiles show that some fees are higher.
The listings may include a dog’s estimated age, expected size, energy level, medical circumstances and reported compatibility with children, cats or other dogs.
That information is not filler beneath the photos.
Some dogs are listed as compatible with all three. For others, compatibility with cats or children is unknown. Certain dogs need quiet homes, patient adopters or continuing medical care.
“Rescue dog” describes one part of the story.
It does not describe the entire dog.
Amazing Dogs says its dogs are microchipped and receive medical preparation before adoption, including age-appropriate vaccinations, deworming and flea-and-tick treatment.
Adult dogs are spayed or neutered unless a veterinarian recommends otherwise for medical reasons.
If the rescue approves the match and the dog is comfortable with the adopter and any household dogs, the paperwork and payment may be completed at the event. The adopter may assume care that day and receives the dog’s medical records.
This Is Not a One-Sunday Visit
Amazing Dogs was formed in 2021 and operates as a federally tax-exempt 501(c)(3).
Its 2025 federal tax return says the organization rescued more than 2,000 dogs that year. The filing reports three employees and approximately 100 volunteers.
Additional San Marcos events are listed for Sept. 20, Oct. 4, Oct. 18 and Nov. 1, all from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the same Petco.

A little disappointed we can't pick a dog ahead for this one, but happy there's more events coming up. I'll try to be quicker next time!
$250 is more than I expected, but it sounds like they really take care of the dogs beforehand. Might stop by just to see who shows up.
Jen_RiversYeah, I was surprised at the fee too, but it does sound like they're thorough with all the vet stuff. Even if you just visit, it's always fun meeting the pups!
I like that they tell you not every dog is a match for every home. We got our rescue pup last year and took our time meeting a few before deciding. Hope lots of dogs find families!
