Most cookbooks enter the world quietly.

A sales page appears. A press release escapes. Somebody places a suspiciously perfect sprig of parsley beside the cover.

The Golden Door Table is taking a more interesting route.

Golden Door Country Store will hold its Fall Maker’s Market on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 314 Deer Springs Road in San Marcos.

The free event will feature local vendors, food, live music and complimentary face painting.

Then comes the ingredient that keeps this from becoming another autumn shopping announcement.

Golden Door Executive Chef Greg Frey Jr. will hold a cookbook meet-and-greet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

His new book was published Sept. 15.

That gives San Marcos an appearance with the author just four days after release—before most cookbooks have collected their first buttery fingerprint near the dessert section.

One Hundred Recipes Leave the Resort

Published by Andrews McMeel Publishing, The Golden Door Table packs 100 whole-food recipes into 336 pages.

Frey is credited as an author, along with photographer Sara Remington.

The collection carries Golden Door’s culinary approach beyond the resort through breakfasts, broths, seasonal salads, desserts and recipes adaptable to different dietary needs.

Named dishes include Sunday Miso Black Cod, Potassium Broth, Ginger Snap Cookies and Madeleine Cake.

The publisher identifies Frey as Golden Door’s executive chef and says he has led the resort’s culinary program for more than 10 years. His work includes developing relationships with local farmers, fishermen and ranchers.

Translation:

This is not a cookbook assembled by someone who discovered a cutting board immediately after signing a publishing contract.

Its roots are in San Marcos.

This Market Has Something Growing Behind It

Golden Door says its Country Store was created to share produce from the resort’s gardens and groves with the surrounding community.

The store regularly carries seasonal produce, breads, preserves, honey and other artisanal foods. Specific products remain subject to availability.

It also says it supports San Diego organic farms and local artisans whenever possible.

Saturday’s market takes that idea and gives it more tables.

Local vendors get a place to sell their work. Visitors get food, music, free face painting and a chance to meet the chef whose recipes emerged from the culinary program operating nearby.

Golden Door also states that 100% of its net profits help end child abuse and transform young lives.

That gives a purchase here a connection beyond the shopping bag.

Admission and face painting are advertised as free. Food, cookbooks and vendor merchandise are not advertised as complimentary.

The organizer has not published a complete vendor list, food menu or musical lineup. It also has not said whether previously purchased books may be brought for signatures.

The Country Store accepts cards and does not accept cash. Golden Door has not clarified whether every independent vendor follows that rule.
