San Marcos Business Owners Have an Early Wake-Up Call Tuesday.

Breakfast, business connections and a conversation with the commander of the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station are on the menu Aug. 18.

There are networking breakfasts — and then there are networking breakfasts where the person sitting at the front of the room can actually tell you what's happening with public safety in your city.

San Marcos gets the latter Tuesday morning.

The San Marcos Chamber of Commerce is teaming up with the Business Builders Network for a special Business Connections Breakfast on Tuesday, Aug. 18, bringing local business owners together with Capt. George Crysler, commander of the San Marcos Sheriff's Station.

And yes, this one starts early.

The breakfast runs from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at Broken Yolk Café, 101 S. Las Posas Road.

After some morning networking, Crysler is scheduled to discuss public safety in San Marcos, current safety initiatives, trends affecting businesses and residents, and priorities for the Sheriff's Station.

There will also be a Q&A, which could make this considerably more useful than the typical exchange-business-cards-and-head-back-to-work networking event.

The Chamber describes the morning as an opportunity to make new professional connections while hearing directly from local law enforcement about issues affecting the community.

One Important Detail Before You Show Up

This particular breakfast is open to San Marcos Chamber members only, and advance registration is required.

Admission is $30 per person and includes a full breakfast.

So this is not a “wander into Broken Yolk Tuesday morning and see what happens” situation.

For Chamber members, however, it's a pretty interesting combination: breakfast, networking and a chance to ask questions directly of the person leading the local Sheriff's Station.

Why We're Watching the Local Chambers

This is exactly why we're going to start paying a little closer attention to what our local Chambers are doing.

Their calendars aren't just ribbon cuttings and mixers. They can include workshops, government discussions, business education and opportunities to hear directly from people making decisions around North County.

One word of caution: Chamber calendars also include community events that aren't necessarily produced by the Chamber itself. We'll separate those out rather than throwing everything on the calendar into one giant “Chamber events” bucket.

Because nobody needs another calendar disguised as an article.
