Vista Sports Roundup: Mission Vista Athletes Step Into the Spotlight |
Fall sports are picking up speed, and this week's Vista roundup gives us some new names, another sport hitting the scoreboard and a first win worth celebrating. |
And yes, you'll see the Mission Vista Timberwolves in the mix this week. Fun local fact: although the school's campus sits just over the city line in Oceanside, Mission Vista is part of Vista Unified School District.
Now, on to the sports.
Mission Vista Volleyball Has Some Names to Know
Mission Vista girls volleyball has opened the season 9–5, with several Timberwolves emerging as statistical leaders.
Junior Maya Hopkins is averaging 3.5 kills per set.
Senior Olivia Ford is hitting .359 and leads Mission Vista with 12 total blocks, while senior Raquel Perez is averaging 3.1 digs per set and has a team-high seven serving aces.
Mission Vista has already packed plenty of volleyball into the opening weeks, including a 3–2 victory over Rancho Bernardo on Aug. 26.
Three different players making an impact in three different parts of the game. That's exactly the kind of thing we like finding.
Timberwolves Field Hockey Gets Its First Win
Mission Vista picked up its first varsity field hockey victory of the season Aug. 25, defeating La Jolla Country Day 2–1.
It's an early milestone for the Timberwolves and gives us another fall sport to keep an eye on as the season develops.
Vista Flag Football Looks to Regain Its Early Momentum
Vista High girls flag football opened the season by winning two of its first three games, but the Panthers have hit a tougher stretch.
Vista fell 27–0 to Coastal Academy on Aug. 25 before Holtville defeated the Panthers 35–13 on Aug. 27, moving Vista to 2–3.
One of those early victories was a 20–0 shutout of Tri-City Christian on Aug. 19, so we've already seen what the Panthers can do when things click.
There's plenty of season left to find that rhythm again.
RBV Water Polo Hits the Pool
Rancho Buena Vista boys water polo is officially underway.
The Longhorns opened their season Aug. 27 against Sage Creek in a high-scoring 15–11 loss.
No victory yet, but putting 11 goals on the board in the opener gives us another Vista team to watch — particularly once individual statistics start giving us some names to recognize.
Who Will Be Next?
Girls golf, girls tennis and cross country are also on our radar as their fall schedules develop.
Those individual sports could end up producing some of our favorite stories.
A runner with a huge invitational finish. A golfer shooting a personal best. A tennis player pulling off a big win.
When that happens, we want to know who did it.
