If Vista football needed to search a little harder for the good news this week, San Marcos had the opposite problem.

There was plenty to go around.

Mission Hills swept Oceanside across all three levels, with freshman, JV and varsity each putting a win on the board. San Marcos High knocked off previously unbeaten Poway 28-14, while St. Joseph Academy continued its strong start with a 50-26 victory over Cornerstone Christian.

That's a pretty productive week of football.

Mission Hills Goes Three-for-Three Against Oceanside

Start with the Grizzlies.

Mission Hills varsity went on the road Friday and defeated Oceanside 38-10, improving to 3-0 on the season.

Through three varsity games, Mission Hills has scored 120 points while allowing just 13.

But varsity wasn't alone.

The Mission Hills JV team also went to Oceanside and came home with a 19-7 victory. The JV Grizzlies are now 3-0 after earlier wins over El Camino and Quartz Hill.

And the freshman Grizzlies?

They took care of business at home, defeating Oceanside 34-7. They're also 3-0 after beating El Camino 45-7 and Quartz Hill 28-6.

Three Mission Hills teams.

Three Oceanside opponents.

Three wins.

That's a sweep.

Mission Hills varsity heads back on the road Friday, Sept. 11, to face Granite Hills at 7 p.m.

San Marcos Hands Poway Its First Loss

The Knights had something to celebrate too.

San Marcos High welcomed Poway for its first home game of the regular season and came away with a 28-14 victory.

The win moves San Marcos to 2-1 and gives the Knights a strong response after their 27-21 road loss to Great Oak the previous week.

Poway entered the matchup 2-0 after wins over Scripps Ranch and Ramona, so this wasn't simply another early-season victory for San Marcos.

The Knights handed an unbeaten opponent its first loss.

San Marcos now gets a week without a varsity game before returning Sept. 18 on the road against San Pasqual.

St. Joseph Keeps Winning Too

San Marcos' smaller private-school program added another win to the pile.

St. Joseph Academy defeated Cornerstone Christian 50-26, continuing the Crusaders' strong start in 8-man football.

The two-time defending CIF champions remain one of the more interesting football stories in San Marcos this season — a small program with some very large expectations.

While Mission Hills' sweep understandably grabs much of this week's attention, St. Joseph continues putting wins on the board as another championship defense takes shape.

A Pretty Good Week to Play Football in San Marcos

This week's numbers tell the story pretty well.

Mission Hills varsity: win.

Mission Hills JV: win.

Mission Hills freshman: win.

San Marcos varsity: win.

St. Joseph Academy: win.

That's five local results and five victories.

More importantly, we're starting to see football stories developing beyond one Friday-night scoreboard.

Mission Hills has three undefeated teams working their way through the program. San Marcos just handed an unbeaten opponent its first loss. And St. Joseph continues its pursuit of another championship season.

Not a bad week at all.
