Mission Hills Sweeps Ramona as San Marcos Football Rolls Through Friday Night

Friday night was a good night to play football in San Marcos.

Mission Hills bounced back from its first varsity loss of the season with a commanding 49-8 victory over Ramona, while San Marcos High rolled past San Pasqual 41-14.

And the varsity teams weren't the only ones celebrating.

Mission Hills freshman and JV football each defeated Ramona by the exact same score, 43-6, completing a three-level sweep for the Grizzlies.

Mission Hills Answers Back in a Big Way

One week after falling one point short against Granite Hills, Mission Hills didn't leave much suspense this time.

The Grizzlies defeated Ramona 49-8, putting up their highest point total of the season and improving to 4-1. Mission Hills led 43-0 by halftime. 

It was exactly the kind of response you'd expect from a team that opened the season with three straight victories before last week's 28-27 heartbreaker.

Mission Hills now gets a break before opening league play against La Costa Canyon on Friday, Oct. 2. 

And the Younger Grizzlies Were Just as Impressive

The good news started before varsity ever took the field.

Mission Hills freshman football defeated Ramona 43-6 Thursday night to remain perfect at 5-0.

The freshman Grizzlies have now beaten El Camino 45-7, Quartz Hill 28-6, Oceanside 34-7, Granite Hills 34-18 and Ramona 43-6.

That's 184 points scored and just 44 allowed through five games. 

Mission Hills JV followed with another 43-6 victory over Ramona Friday afternoon, improving to 4-1. 

Same opponent.

Same 43-6 score.

Two different Mission Hills teams.

Then varsity finished the job.

That's a pretty good couple of days for Grizzlies football.

San Marcos High Puts Up a Season Best

The Knights had their own celebration Friday night.

San Marcos High traveled to San Pasqual and came home with a 41-14 victory, improving to 3-1 and winning its second consecutive game.

The 41 points were a season high for San Marcos, topping the 28 the Knights scored in their previous win over Poway.

After opening with a 23-7 victory over Army-Navy Academy, San Marcos suffered its only loss at Great Oak, 27-21. Since then, the Knights have responded with back-to-back wins over Poway and San Pasqual.

Next up is a considerably different challenge.

San Marcos hosts Lincoln Friday, Sept. 25, at 7:15 p.m. 

Plenty to Celebrate in San Marcos

Five weeks into the season, both of San Marcos' larger football programs have given local fans plenty to follow.

Mission Hills varsity sits at 4-1 after answering its first loss with its biggest offensive night of the season.

San Marcos High is 3-1 and has won two straight.

Mission Hills JV is 4-1.

And the freshman Grizzlies haven't lost at all.

They're 5-0, and that younger group is quickly becoming one of the stories we're going to keep watching as the season moves into its second half.

Not a bad Friday night — or Thursday night — in San Marcos.
