There is more than one scoreboard worth watching in San Marcos this football season.
Mission Hills varsity continued its dominant start Friday night with a 35-0 shutout of Quartz Hill, improving to 2-0.
San Marcos High came up one score short on the road, falling 27-21 to Great Oak moving to 1-1.
But look a little further down the programs and there's another story developing.
Mission Hills' freshmen are also undefeated.
Mission Hills Varsity Has Allowed Three Points in Two Games
Mission Hills followed its 47-3 opening victory over El Camino with another defensive statement Friday.
The Grizzlies shut out Quartz Hill 35-0, improving to 2-0 while outscoring their first two opponents by a combined 82-3.
That's not a bad way to introduce yourself to the season.
Two games. Two wins. Just three points allowed.
Now the Grizzlies take that unbeaten record on the road for the first time this season.
Mission Hills travels to Oceanside on Friday, Sept. 4, looking to make it three straight.
The Freshman Grizzlies Are Doing Some Winning of Their Own
The varsity isn't the only Mission Hills team off to a fast start.
Mission Hills' freshman team went on the road Thursday and defeated Quartz Hill 28-6, improving to 2-0.
That followed a convincing 45-7 victory over El Camino in the freshman season opener.
Do the math and the freshman Grizzlies have outscored their first two opponents 73-13.
That's a pretty impressive start for the younger guys wearing Mission Hills colors — and one worth recognizing alongside the varsity success.
The freshmen return home Thursday, Sept. 3, to face Oceanside at 5 p.m.
San Marcos Varsity Comes Up Six Points Short
San Marcos High's second road trip didn't end the way the Knights wanted, but this one stayed competitive.
Great Oak defeated San Marcos 27-21, handing the Knights their first loss after a 23-7 opening victory over Aliso Niguel.
The Knights leave their opening two-game road swing at 1-1, with both games decided by 16 points or fewer.
Now they finally get to come home.
San Marcos hosts Poway Friday, Sept. 4, at 7:15 p.m., giving Knights fans their first chance to see the varsity team at home during the regular season.
Freshman Knights Split Their First Two
San Marcos High's freshman team has also played twice, and they're sitting at 1-1.
The freshman Knights opened with a 26-14 victory over Aliso Niguel on Aug. 20 before traveling to Great Oak Wednesday and falling 32-16.
Like the varsity squad, the younger Knights now turn their attention toward Poway.
Their next game is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 3, at Poway at 5 p.m.
San Marcos Football Is Bigger Than Friday Night
Varsity will naturally get most of the Friday-night attention.
But there are a lot more local kids putting on those uniforms each week, and the first two weeks of the season have given San Marcos plenty to follow at both levels.
Mission Hills varsity is 2-0.
Mission Hills freshman is 2-0.
San Marcos varsity is 1-1.
San Marcos freshman is 1-1.
That's four teams combining for six wins in eight games — and a lot more San Marcos football than you'll find on a single Friday-night scoreboard.

Love seeing local kids getting recognition. Football really brings San Marcos together, can’t wait for some Friday night lights!
Does anyone know if the freshman games are open to the public? My son’s interested in watching before high school next year.

Was at the San Marcos game last week. Tough loss but they never gave up. Home opener should be exciting!
