Vista Sports Roundup: Longhorns Find Their Groove as Mission Vista Keeps Rolling |
The fall sports calendar is filling up around Vista — and this week, the volleyball courts provided plenty of the noise. |
Rancho Buena Vista found the win column twice, including a sweep of its crosstown neighbor. Mission Vista survived a five-set battle Wednesday night. Vista flag football hit a bump in the road, while field hockey and several other fall sports are beginning to get their seasons moving.
Here's what caught our eye this week.
RBV Volleyball Finds Its Footing
After a difficult start to the season, Rancho Buena Vista girls volleyball has put together back-to-back wins.
The Longhorns picked up their first varsity victory Aug. 22 with a 2–0 win over Palo Verde Valley.
Then came the one with a little extra local flavor.
RBV swept Vista High 3–0 on Aug. 25, improving to 2–6. The Longhorns took the three sets 25–10, 25–15 and 25–15.
Two straight wins after opening the season with six losses?
That's what you call finding the reset button.
Mission Vista Wins a Five-Set Battle
Mission Vista volleyball continues to give us plenty to watch.
The Timberwolves went on the road Wednesday and defeated Rancho Bernardo 3–2, adding another win after a busy stretch of tournament play.
And now we have some Timberwolves names to go with the results.
Junior Maya Hopkins is averaging 3.4 kills per set. Senior Olivia Ford is hitting .413 and has recorded 11 total blocks, while senior Raquel Perez is averaging 3.4 digs per set and has five serving aces.
That's exactly the kind of stuff we want to find in these roundups — not just who won, but which local kids are helping make it happen.
Vista Flag Football Moves to 2–2
Vista High girls flag football entered Tuesday having won two of its first three games.
The Panthers couldn't make it three.
Coastal Academy defeated Vista 27–0 on Aug. 25, dropping the Panthers to 2–2. Vista's two victories came against Tri-City Christian, including a 20–0 shutout on Aug. 19.
It's an early-season split for the Panthers, with plenty of football still ahead.
Field Hockey Joins the Fall Scoreboard
Mission Vista field hockey has gotten its season underway, too.
The Timberwolves dropped a close 2–1 game to Mission Hills on Aug. 19, followed by a 2–0 loss to Point Loma on Aug. 21.
Rancho Buena Vista and San Marcos also met in field hockey on Aug. 25. We haven't found a final score we're comfortable putting in print yet, so we'll leave that one on the sidelines for now.
Not every week is going to be filled with wins. Part of following local sports is following the teams while their seasons take shape.
Still Warming Up Around Vista
We're also watching girls golf, girls tennis, cross country and boys water polo as those schedules get rolling.
Rancho Buena Vista hosted the Longhorn Open in girls golf this week, but published results have proven surprisingly elusive.
Water polo is also beginning to show up on the schedule, while cross country and tennis should give us more individual names and performances as their seasons develop.
We'll keep watching.

Tough loss for Vista flag football. Hoping they can turn it around, it’s early still.

Mission Vista always seems to have strong volleyball teams. Those player stats are impressive!
