Friday night gave Vista football a little bit of everything.

Rancho Buena Vista put together its most convincing varsity win of the young season, Tri-City Christian survived a one-point thriller, and Vista High continued working through a difficult opening stretch on the road at Army-Navy Academy.

This week, though, there was no searching required to find the good news.

The Longhorns brought plenty of it.

RBV Offense Comes Alive in 34-8 Win

Rancho Buena Vista bounced back in a big way Friday, defeating Monte Vista 34-8 and improving to 2-2.

And the Longhorns did plenty of damage through the air.

Quarterback Van Piercy completed 11 of 20 passes for 231 yards and three touchdowns, according to offensive statistics shared with us by RBV football and Coach Ariel Savage.

Sean Richards caught five passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. Isaiah Simmons added three catches for 63 yards and a score, while tight end Madsen Smith caught two passes for 45 yards and another touchdown.

Kaipo Gutierrez added another score on the ground, carrying nine times for 36 yards and a touchdown.

That's three Piercy touchdown passes to three different receivers — and four offensive touchdowns spread across the Longhorns attack.

Coach Savage also highlighted a Piercy-to-Smith connection as RBV's “Week 4 Play of the Week,” giving Longhorns fans another look at an offense that had plenty working Friday night.

RBV returns to Vista next Friday, Sept. 18, to face Fullerton at 7 p.m. The game is scheduled to be played at Vista High School.

Vista High Keeps Working Through a Tough Stretch

Across town, Vista High traveled to Army-Navy Academy, where the Warriors came away with a 37-9 victory.

The Panthers have been working through a challenging opening month, but this is also a team that showed its offensive potential early in the season, putting up 46 points in a one-point opener against Sweetwater.

Friday wasn't their night.

There was no Vista JV game this week, so the focus belonged entirely to varsity.

Now the Panthers get another week to work, adjust and keep building toward the football still ahead.

One Friday-night scoreboard doesn't get to tell the entire story of a high school season — especially when there are plenty more Fridays still to come.

Tri-City Wins a One-Point Thriller

Tri-City Christian gave Vista another reason to celebrate Friday night.

The Eagles edged Nuview Bridge 31-30 in a game decided by a single point.

The victory was a nice response after Tri-City's 28-20 loss to Hamilton the previous week and gets the Eagles right back into the win column.

One-point games can go either way.

This one went Vista's way.

And that means two of the area's three varsity programs walked away with victories this week.

A Better Friday Night in Vista

A week ago, the brightest Vista football results came from RBV's younger players.

This week, varsity took its turn.

RBV found its offensive rhythm, Tri-City survived a nail-biter, and Vista High got another week of experience against a competitive opponent.

There will be bigger games ahead as the season moves deeper into September.

For now, though, Vista football gets to celebrate two varsity wins, some impressive individual performances and another week of local kids putting in the work.
