Longhorns Push Fullerton to the Finish as Vista Football Battles Through a Tough Week |
The Longhorns come within six points behind big nights from Ean Perfect and Van Piercy, while Vista High and Tri-City Christian look ahead after difficult Friday results. |
Not every Friday night gives you a victory to celebrate.
Sometimes the story is about how close you came, who stepped up and what you carry into the next one.
That was the case for Vista-area football this week, with Rancho Buena Vista providing the night’s closest contest in a 34-28 battle with Fullerton.
The Longhorns didn’t get the final result they wanted, but they did give fans plenty to cheer about — including four offensive touchdowns and a pair of standout individual performances.
Perfect Has a Big Night for RBV
Ean Perfect turned in one of RBV’s strongest individual performances of the season, rushing for 128 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 carries. His night included a 70-yard run, giving the Longhorns an explosive play when they needed it.

Fullerton ultimately held on 34-28, dropping RBV to 2-3 at the midpoint of the regular season. The Longhorns return to the road Friday, Sept. 25, to face Canyon Hills at 7 p.m. RBV JV Moves the Ball Through the Air RBV’s JV team also faced Fullerton this week, falling 33-20 Thursday afternoon. The Longhorns generated nearly 300 passing yards despite the final result. Coach Ariel Savage also highlighted JV wide receiver Billy Brooks for his work during the game. Sometimes development doesn’t show up neatly in the win column, and the younger Longhorns still found ways to move the football and put 20 points on the board. A Red, White and Blue Night for RBV There was plenty happening beyond the field, too. RBV’s student section brought a full red, white and blue patriotic theme to Friday night’s game, with American flags, patriotic clothing, signs and plenty of school spirit filling the stands. |

It was another reminder that Friday Night Lights are about more than four quarters of football. The students in the stands are part of the show, too. Vista High Runs Into a Tough Eastlake Team Vista High traveled to Eastlake Friday night, where the Titans defeated the Panthers 44-0. Vista’s JV team also faced Eastlake this week and fell 49-0. There isn’t much value in dressing those scores up as something they weren’t. It was a difficult week for the Panthers. But high school football seasons aren’t defined by one Friday — or even one stretch of Fridays. The Panthers still have football ahead of them, and we’ll keep following the players, teams and moments worth recognizing as the season continues. Tri-City Christian Falls in League Opener Tri-City Christian entered Friday coming off its dramatic 31-30 victory over Nuview Bridge. This week, Foothills Christian handed the Eagles a 33-13 loss in their Sunset League opener. Tri-City is now 3-2. The Eagles now get some extra time before returning to action Oct. 2 against Victory Christian Academy. Still Plenty of Football Ahead Week 5 didn’t deliver a Vista-area win, but it wasn’t without performances worth recognizing. Perfect ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Piercy threw two touchdown passes. RBV pushed Fullerton to within six points. And across the area’s programs, players at every level showed up and competed for another week. That’s part of covering an entire season. We celebrate the wins when they come. And when they don’t, we keep watching for the kids doing something worth cheering about.
