A parade can cover a lot of ground.

In San Marcos, the route stretches approximately 2.5 miles—from Comet Drive near Palomar College, east along Mission Road and into the Civic Center.

But one part of the route remains unmarked: 2026.

As of Aug. 19, neither the City of San Marcos nor the Lake San Marcos Kiwanis Club had posted a 2026 parade date on the official pages reviewed by North Valley Flare.

No official cancellation announcement was found, either.

So the parade is not confirmed—and it is not officially canceled. It is sitting in that uncomfortable civic waiting room known as “no announcement yet.”

What We Know About the Parade

The last San Marcos Holiday Parade took place Sunday, Dec. 7, 2025.

The Lake San Marcos Kiwanis Club promoted it as the 28th annual parade, with a 1 p.m. start and the theme “Light Up the Holidays.”

The route began near Palomar College and traveled east on Mission Road toward the San Marcos Civic Center.

Yes, Mission Road.

Some published descriptions have called it Mission Avenue, but San Marcos residents—and street signs—know better.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department documented the same 2.5-mile route when it participated in the 2023 parade.

The parade has not always occurred on the first Sunday of December. In 2024, the city announced it for Sunday, Dec. 8, although Dec. 1 was the month’s first Sunday.

That means Dec. 6—the first Sunday of December 2026—is only a possible date, not a confirmed one.

The Part That Goes Beyond Floats

The parade also doubles as a rolling literacy project.

The San Marcos Chamber of Commerce’s directory says the Lake San Marcos Kiwanis Club distributes approximately 2,500 books to young children during the event.

County documents identify the effort as the Captain Book Literacy Program.

The name may sound like a superhero who fights overdue library fines, but the mission is real: putting books into children’s hands.

San Diego County awarded the Lake San Marcos Kiwanis Club Foundation $5,000 on March 27, 2024, to purchase books for Captain Book. That funding was designated for books—not the parade’s general operating expenses.

Public Money Has Helped Keep It Moving

Other public records show financial assistance for specific parade costs.

The San Marcos Community Foundation awarded the Kiwanis foundation $1,500 on Nov. 19, 2024, for traffic and safety expenses.

The application referenced coordination with San Marcos Public Works and barricades for the assembly area and road closures.

Foundation meeting minutes also document a $1,000 sponsorship allocation for the Kiwanis Holiday Parade in November 2025.

Putting on a parade, it turns out, requires more than tinsel and a playlist.

San Marcos requires special-event approval when an activity affects public streets or needs traffic control or public-safety services.

For now, the records confirm the parade’s route, literacy work and recent public support.

The question they do not answer is whether the procession will return in 2026.
