Vista Sports Roundup: Fall Sports Are Underway — And We’re Watching More Than Football |
Football may get the Friday-night lights, but there are a whole lot more Vista athletes putting in the work this fall. |
So we're widening the lens.
North Valley Flare is kicking off a new Vista Sports Roundup, following the action at Vista High, Rancho Buena Vista and Mission Vista beyond the football field.
Across Vista's high schools, that means sports including volleyball, girls flag football, field hockey, cross country, girls golf, girls tennis and boys water polo.
If Vista kids are competing, we want to know about it.
RBV Frosh Volleyball Gets Its First Win
Let's start with the freshmen.
Rancho Buena Vista's Frosh girls volleyball team picked up its first win of the young season Tuesday night, sweeping its match 2–0.
The Frosh Longhorns are officially in the win column — and they're getting our first shoutout of the new roundup.
Not a bad way to get things started.
Mission Vista Volleyball Bounces Back Mission Vista girls volleyball has already seen plenty of early-season action.
The Timberwolves fell to San Clemente in straight sets on Aug. 14, 25–15 and 25–22, before turning things around against Tesoro the following day. Mission Vista took the Aug. 15 match 2–1, giving the Timberwolves an early-season win as they work through the opening stretch of their schedule. And there's plenty more volleyball ahead.
But This Roundup Is Going Well Beyond the Gym Here's where this gets fun.
Vista's fall sports calendar is packed with athletes competing in sports that don't always get the same attention as football.
We'll be watching what's happening on the courts, courses, fields, cross-country trails and in the pool across Vista's high schools.
Some weeks there may be a huge volleyball win. Another week it could be a runner turning in a remarkable race, a golfer shooting a personal best, a tennis player pulling off a big win, a water polo player having a monster game or a flag football team delivering an upset.
And we're especially interested in the individual accomplishments behind the final scores.
A personal best. A game-winning play. A school record. A huge tournament performance. A freshman having a breakout game. A senior finishing a high-school career on a high note. Those are local sports stories, too.
And Yes, We Want to Know Their Names A scoreboard can tell you who won. We'd rather also tell you which local kids did something worth celebrating.
Whenever individual performances and accomplishments are available, we'll be looking to give Vista's student-athletes their moment in the spotlight.
Because somewhere in Vista, there's probably a parent, grandparent, coach or teammate who's going to be pretty happy to see that name.

Would be nice if the schools posted schedules somewhere easy to find, so we know when to watch a match or meet.
I’ve always felt student-athletes deserve credit for individual achievements, not only the final scores. Looking forward to seeing names!
Congrats to the Longhorns volleyball! Was at the game and it was a fun one.
I hope this means more people will show up to support the smaller sports. Some stands are pretty empty.

So many athletes work just as hard as football players. This is overdue.

Glad to see volleyball and water polo getting some love finally. My son plays golf for Vista and they always feel left out of the spotlight.
