The likely answer?

Crunch Fitness.

A City of Vista building permit application, listed as B26-0603 in the city’s applied building permits report, points to Crunch Fitness work tied to the former gym property. A separate CoStar lease item from May also listed Crunch Fitness at 680 Hacienda Drive among notable San Diego-area retail deals.

So yes, the rumor has moved out of “somebody said something on Facebook” territory.

It has entered the much less glamorous, but far more useful, world of permit spreadsheets.

The Old Gym May Be Getting a Spotter
