Highway 78 Blues Will Meet Downtown Chrome at the Vista Rod Run

More than 350 classic cars and trucks are expected to fill Historic Downtown Vista with polished chrome, vintage curves and enough horsepower to make a Prius feel slightly self-conscious.

This year, the soundtrack will include a band with a particularly appropriate North County connection.

The Tradition, a San Diego blues band behind the song “Highway 78,” is scheduled to perform during the 36th Annual Vista Rod Run on Sunday, September 6.

The free event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Organizers are also promising live music throughout the event, specialty automotive vendors and easy access to downtown Vista’s shops, restaurants and breweries.

Think of it as a car show that refuses to stay in its lane.

The Tradition’s appearance is more than background music for people comparing engines and pretending they understand every word of the conversation.

The musicians have been building a regional résumé of their own.

In 2024, the group appeared on the San Diego Music Awards ballot under its earlier name, Lowdown and the Tradition. It was nominated for Best New Artist alongside six other emerging San Diego-area acts.

The group now records and performs as The Tradition.

Its four-song EP, Bad Reputation, was released in August 2024. The recording includes “Bad Reputation,” “Get On,” “Lock Me Up” and the locally irresistible “Highway 78.”

The EP was recorded at Sacred Cat Studios and was later listed among the Best Blues Album nominees for the 2025 San Diego Music Awards. The Tradition was also included in the lineup for a 2025 nominee showcase at Humphreys Backstage Live.

That makes two consecutive years of San Diego Music Awards recognition—first under the group’s longer name and then as The Tradition.

Not bad for a band with a Bad Reputation.

For North County residents, “Highway 78” is not just a clever song title.

Caltrans describes State Route 78 as North County’s primary east-west travel corridor. It runs through Vista and San Marcos while connecting the inland communities around Escondido with Oceanside and the coast.

It also provides North County drivers with ample time to contemplate life, brake lights and why everyone suddenly needs the same freeway at 5 p.m.

That makes The Tradition a fitting addition to Vista’s annual celebration of vehicles and the people who keep them polished, restored and proudly on the road.

Visitors can walk among hundreds of classic cars and trucks, listen to music and explore downtown businesses without buying an admission ticket. Vehicle owners can register separately to enter their cars in the show.

The organizers’ public event pages do not currently list The Tradition’s exact stage or performance time. Anyone coming specifically to see the band should check the official Rod Run or band channels for the final entertainment schedule before leaving home.
