It took about six years to build Roadies Brewing Co.

It may have taken only two years to lose it.

And in a particularly painful bit of timing, the Vista brewery announced that it plans to close at the end of August just as it was preparing to celebrate its second anniversary.

But before we call this one over, there’s one important detail:

Roadies is looking for someone willing to keep the show going.

This One Started Right Here in Vista

Roadies wasn't a brewery concept dreamed up in a corporate conference room.

Owners Diane and Sean Hilz got the idea from their years helping with their daughter's Rancho Buena Vista High School color guard and marching band activities.

The parent volunteers called themselves “The Roadies.”

They built props, hauled equipment, transported instruments and spent some very long days helping students get performances onto the field.

Eventually, that experience inspired something considerably bigger: a brewery built around beer, music and the people behind the scenes who make things happen.

After years of planning, Roadies finally opened on Poinsettia Avenue in August 2024.

They Didn't Build Just Another Taproom

If you've been inside Roadies, you know the Hilzes didn't exactly take the minimalist approach.

The roughly 5,300-square-foot space was designed to make live music part of the business rather than something occasionally squeezed into the corner on a Saturday night.

There was a professional stage and sound system, a piano-key-inspired bar, cymbal light fixtures, musical memorabilia and beers with names inspired by songs and music.

Bands, solo performers and DJs became regulars.

For local musicians, Roadies became something increasingly difficult to find: an actual place to play.

Then the Math Stopped Working

According to the brewery's announcement, there wasn't one single reason for the closure.

The family experienced the unexpected death of Sean's mother along with financial challenges that followed. At the same time, Roadies was dealing with accumulated debt and the rising costs of operating the brewery and entertainment venue.

Eventually, as the owners put it, they simply couldn't “get the math to math.”

It's a painfully simple explanation for a problem facing plenty of small businesses.

People can love what you've built.

You can make a good product.

You can create a loyal community.

And the numbers can still refuse to cooperate.

But Is This Actually Last Call?

Here's where the Roadies story gets interesting.

The Hilzes aren't simply locking the doors and walking away.

They're looking for serious investors or prospective buyers interested in taking over what is essentially an already-built brewery and live entertainment venue.

That means August 31 could be Roadies' final day.

Or it could become the beginning of Roadies 2.0.

The brewery's calendar remains filled with live music through its final weekend, and the owners are encouraging customers to come out, support the staff and help them empty the tanks the proper way.

There's something fitting about that.

Roadies began with a group of Vista parents working behind the scenes to make sure the show could go on.

Now, nearly a decade after the idea first started taking shape, the question is whether someone else will step behind the scenes and do the same for them.
