Mama Kat’s Is Finally Open in Its New San Marcos Home

If you ever waited for a weekend table at the old Mama Kat’s, you already understand why “more room” is pretty exciting news.

And they definitely found more room.

Mama Kat’s Restaurant & Pie Shop is officially open at 288 Rancheros Drive in San Marcos, taking over the former My Yard Live property and beginning a pretty big new chapter for one of the city’s longtime local favorites.

Same Mama Kat’s.

Much bigger house.

From Grandpa Allen’s to Mama Kat’s

This isn't some restaurant chain suddenly discovering San Marcos.

Mama Kat’s roots here go back decades.

Michael began working alongside his mother in 1993. In 2005, he purchased Grandpa Allen’s Family Restaurant, and three years later, the restaurant officially became Mama Kat’s.

Michael, Kristen and their four daughters continued building the family business from there.

Over the years, Mama Kat’s became the kind of place where breakfast came with a good chance of running into somebody you knew — and where showing up hungry on a busy weekend sometimes required a little patience.

The longtime location at 950 W. San Marcos Boulevard closed in June while the family prepared for the move.

Now the doors are open again.

They Didn't Just Move the Tables

The new location isn't simply the old Mama Kat’s dropped into a larger building.

The family has been finding ways to bring the community along with them.

Founders Row offered supporters the opportunity to have dedicated engraved chairs. Heritage Bricks are being incorporated into the outdoor fire-pit patio, and a Founding Families program is tied to the restaurant's large family table.

In other words, Mama Kat’s didn't just want customers in the new building.

They wanted a little San Marcos history built into it.

Okay, But What About the Pie?

Relax.

There's still pie.

Mama Kat’s has become well known for its pies over the years — enough so that the restaurant previously rolled out a vintage-style pie truck to deliver them around North County.

Breakfast, coffee, baked goods and pie remain part of the Mama Kat’s story at the new location.

And after the wait between closing one restaurant and opening the next, that's probably the part longtime customers care about most.

The griddle is hot again.
