Mystery solved. Barnes & Noble is coming to San Marcos — and the company says its new Grand Plaza store is opening in October 2026.

And no, this isn't one of those “somebody on Facebook heard it from somebody who knows somebody” stories. We found the paperwork.

The City of San Marcos issued a building permit earlier this year for tenant improvements at 177 S. Las Posas Road. The description on the permit doesn't leave much room for interpretation:

“TI - BARNES & NOBLE.”

The permit lists $350,000 in tenant improvements. The application was filed October 7, 2025, and the permit was issued January 21, 2026. 

Apparently, this secret has been sitting in city records for months waiting for somebody to notice it. 

Consider it noticed.

City paperwork would already make a pretty compelling case, but there's an even better source:

The bookseller now has a San Marcos — Grand Plaza location listed on its official website at 177 S. Las Posas Road, San Marcos, CA 92078.

And there's finally an answer to the question everyone really wants to know:

When does it open?

Barnes & Noble currently lists the new San Marcos store as opening in October 2026. The company also lists a café among the location's features.

So yes, San Marcos is getting books and coffee.

A new addition to Grand Plaza

The new Barnes & Noble will join the busy Grand Plaza shopping center along South Las Posas Road near Highway 78.

The address puts the bookstore in the stretch between Nordstrom Rack and Ross Dress for Less — the very space that has been getting some curious looks lately.

For anyone keeping score, that's a national bookseller opening a new physical bookstore at a time when we've all gotten pretty accustomed to hearing about retailers shutting their doors. We'll happily take the change of pace.

And judging by how often people still like wandering through an actual bookstore, picking up something they didn't come in for and somehow leaving with three books and a coffee, San Marcos may be ready for it.

The mystery is officially off the shelf.
