Vista and San Marcos Students Head Back on Different Dates |
Summer break is coming to an end across North Valley, but students in Vista and San Marcos won’t all be heading back to class on the same day. The two local school districts begin the 2026–27 school year nearly a week apart.
For families with school-age children, August means backpacks, school supplies, new schedules and the return of the morning commute. Here are the important dates local families need to know. Vista Unified Starts August 12
Students in the Vista Unified School District will return to class on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
The district has several staff preparation days leading up to opening day. District professional development days were scheduled for August 6 and 7, followed by site professional development and preparation days on August 10 and 11. Students arrive the following morning for the official first day of the 2026–27 school year.
Vista Unified includes elementary, middle and high schools throughout Vista and surrounding communities, including Vista High School, Rancho Buena Vista High School, Mission Vista High School, Madison Middle School and numerous elementary campuses.
Individual schools may also have their own orientation, registration and back-to-school activities, so parents should check communications from their specific campus in addition to the district calendar.
San Marcos Unified Starts August 18
Families in the San Marcos Unified School District get almost another week of summer. SMUSD's first day of school is Tuesday, August 18, 2026.
The date applies across the district, including San Marcos High School, Mission Hills High School, San Marcos Middle School, San Elijo Middle School, Double Peak School and the district's elementary campuses.
Mission Hills High School, for example, held registration activities earlier in August and is welcoming families to Grizz Fest on August 14 ahead of the first day of classes.
SMUSD also reminds returning families that annual residency verification is required. The district opened the process in June through ParentVUE. Families using district school bus service also need to submit a new transportation application for the 2026–27 school year.
One District Crosses City LinesSchool district boundaries don't always follow city boundaries.
While Vista Unified is the primary K–12 public school district associated with Vista, San Marcos Unified also operates schools with Vista addresses. Joli Ann Leichtag Elementary, for example, is located on Poinsettia Avenue in Vista but is part of San Marcos Unified. Students there follow the SMUSD calendar and begin school August 18. That makes checking your child's individual district especially important for families living near the Vista–San Marcos boundary.
Expect the Morning Traffic to ReturnThe staggered start dates mean the back-to-school traffic increase will happen in two stages. Vista Unified campuses reopen to students Wednesday, August 12, followed by San Marcos Unified on Tuesday, August 18. Drivers should expect heavier traffic around schools during morning drop-off and afternoon pickup times, particularly during the first few days as families settle into new routines.

Kind of wish they’d staggered middle and high school starts. My two are on totally different schedules this year.

Pro tip: avoid Sycamore Ave at 8am both weeks, it’s just a parking lot with all the schools back.
