Somebody Near North County Could Be Sitting on a $1.5 Million Powerball Ticket

Somewhere in San Diego County, there is potentially a very expensive little piece of paper being treated like absolute garbage.

Maybe it’s in a kitchen drawer.

Maybe it’s wedged between the seats of a car.

Maybe somebody washed it in a pair of jeans and is about to have  the worst laundry day in California history.

Whatever the case, the California Lottery says a Powerball ticket worth $1,532,761 remains unclaimed, and the clock is now ticking loudly.

The ticket was purchased at Varso Gas, near the corner of Escondido Boulevard and Brotherton Road in Escondido, for the February 21, 2026 Powerball drawing.

That’s close enough to Vista and San Marcos that we’re officially calling for a North County drawer-cleaning operation.

Five Numbers Right. One Number Short.

The winning ticket matched all five white Powerball numbers:

27 – 28 – 36 – 48 – 49

It missed only the red Powerball, which was 21.

Missing the Powerball meant no jackpot—but matching those five numbers in California was still good for a very respectable $1,532,761.

And apparently, nearly six months later, nobody has claimed it.

The California Lottery says prizes like this one must be claimed within 180 days of the drawing, which puts the deadline at Thursday, August 20, 2026.

After that?

That ticket becomes a $1.5 million souvenir.

So...Did You Buy Gas in Escondido in February?

Lottery officials are specifically urging anyone who purchased a Powerball ticket at Varso Gas for the February 21 drawing to take another look.

And while the ticket was sold in Escondido, that doesn't necessarily mean the winner lives there.

People commute between Vista, San Marcos and Escondido every day. Somebody could have stopped for gas on the way to work, grabbed a Powerball ticket, tossed it into the console and promptly forgotten it existed.

Which means this may be one of those rare situations where cleaning your car could actually produce a positive return on investment.

If you find a ticket with those five numbers, resist the urge to immediately scream loud enough for the neighbors to hear.

According to the California Lottery, a claimant should bring the original winning ticket, a valid government-issued photo ID, and a completed claim form to a California Lottery District Office before the deadline.

What Happens If Nobody Claims It?

Here’s the consolation prize.

If the ticket expires without being claimed, the more than $1.5 million goes to California public schools, as required by state law.

The Lottery says more than $1.1 billion in unclaimed prize money has gone to public education since California Lottery tickets first went on sale in 1985.

So the money won't simply disappear.

Still, somewhere out there may be a person who is technically a millionaire and has absolutely no idea.

For the next few days, at least.
