🗳️ TODAY IS ELECTION DAY — TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3
Still working through your ballot? Our common-sense Vista & San Marcos voter guide explains the propositions and Measure N in plain English: what the choices mean, without tricks, jargon or telling you how to vote.
Vote centers are open 7 a.m.–8 p.m. today, and official ballot drop boxes close at 8 p.m. Find locations and current instructions at SDVote.com. |
🌤️ THE WEEK AHEAD · NOVEMBER 3–9
Sunshine and mild afternoons start the week, with temperatures climbing toward a very warm weekend. Vista reaches about 83°F Saturday and Sunday, while San Marcos climbs to 87°F Saturday and 86°F Sunday. Keep water handy for outdoor plans.
Overnight lows range from the upper 40s to upper 50s, so a light layer still belongs in the car. Monday starts with clouds before sunshine returns. |
💡 Tip of the Day |
Give your car an event kit: a reusable bag, a light layer and a refillable water bottle. It won’t make you more organized, but it will make you look remarkably prepared. 👜 |

For approximately 15 minutes on October 23, the sky above San Marcos High School became something you don't see at an ordinary Friday night football game. Three hundred illuminated drones formed moving images above the stadium, celebrating the Knights and their graduating seniors.
And this wasn't just another football animation. Creative Skies spelled out every senior football player's name in the sky. That's a pretty memorable way to recognize a graduating class. Read More... |

Vista's City Council had a fairly full agenda Tuesday, October 27. By the end of the meeting, members had voted on neighborhood speed humps, traffic signal design, a sewer construction contract and the next steps for Raintree Park.
Not everything approved means construction starts tomorrow. Some decisions authorize contracts, while others tell city staff what to bring back. Here's what happened. Read More... |
San Marcos City Council got through its October 27 consent calendar without pulling a single item for debate. Six items passed together by unanimous voice vote, with all five council members present.
The approvals covered painting contracts, city payments, and openings on local boards. The rest of the evening included community recognitions, a public comment, and reports from regional agencies. Read More... |
Rancho Buena Vista beat Vista High 56–21 at Dick Haines Stadium on Friday, October 30. Quarterback Van Piercy threw four touchdown passes and ran for another, helping the Longhorns finish the regular season 5–5.
The game renewed a crosstown rivalry that dates to Rancho Buena Vista’s opening in 1987. Both schools brought decades of football history to the field. Read More... |
Mission Hills had plenty to celebrate after beating San Marcos High 42–28 in Discovery Bowl XXIII on October 30. The Grizzlies claimed the rivalry trophy on Senior Night and also won the Chick-fil-A fundraising challenge, adding a second victory to a big week for the school.
The annual matchup dates back to 2004, when Mission Hills opened and gave San Marcos two high school football programs. Twenty-three meetings later, the Discovery Bowl remains a major local rivalry. The Knights came into the game a week after their memorable Senior Night drone show, while Mission Hills celebrated its seniors at home. Read More... |
Six goals. Zero allowed. And one very happy group of Knights.
San Marcos High varsity field hockey shut out Rancho Bernardo 6–0 on October 22, giving the Knights plenty to celebrate. The program had another win to cheer on October 27, when the JV team defeated La Costa Canyon 1–0. Two teams, two shutouts—and a photo that says plenty about the mood. Read More... |
Tuesday delivered the kind of volleyball scoreboard Vista fans could get used to: two local teams, two CIF playoff wins, and not a fourth set in sight.
Mission Vista swept Pacific Ridge 3–0 in Division I on October 27. Tri-City Christian did the same to Southwest EC in Division IV. The postseason doesn't promise anyone a second night, but these teams earned one. Read More... |

San Marcos Firefighters Association Local 4184 joins the gathering. It takes place at the dealership, formerly Biggs Harley-Davidson, rather than at a fire station. Call for admission and tasting prices, which aren’t listed on the event page. |

Dinner gets surprisingly complicated once everybody agrees on Italian. One person means pizza, another wants pasta, and someone was mostly thinking about the garlic bread. That last person may have the clearest plan.
Three Italian restaurants in Vista offer different ways to resolve the discussion: a restaurant with a marketplace next door, a Melrose Drive cafe with take-home family meals, and a Civic Center Drive kitchen where pizza shares billing with plenty of pasta. Read More... |
The hardest part of ordering sushi may be figuring out who at the table actually wants sushi. Someone wants sashimi, someone wants a crunchy roll, and someone quietly hopes there’s chicken. It helps to settle that before the menu becomes a group project.
For sushi in San Marcos, Umami Japanese, Sushi Huku and Umai Sushi offer three useful starting points. Their menus and dining setups serve different plans, from sushi and ramen in North City to a meal where you’d like a little more privacy. Read More... |
