San Marcos Plates for 8: Big Connections at a Small Table |
Chamber members gather at Cocina Del Charro October 28 for a networking lunch with just eight seats |
Most networking lunches come with the same little problem. You meet a room full of people, forget half their names, and try not to talk with your mouth full.
San Marcos is trying something smaller. On Wednesday, October 28, the Chamber of Commerce is putting eight members around a table at Cocina Del Charro. Not eighty. Eight.
It runs from noon to 1:30 p.m. The idea is to actually talk to each other instead of collecting another stack of business cards you’ll never look at again.
Eight Seats, More Conversation
There’s something refreshing about a networking event where you can reasonably expect to hear everybody’s name. The Chamber calls it Plates for 8.
Its Membership Outreach Committee helps guide the conversation, but this isn’t billed as a seminar or a speed-networking marathon. Members get time to talk about what they do, ask questions, and see where their businesses might actually connect.
A table that small also makes it harder to disappear into the crowd. For some people, that’s the whole point. For others, well, at least there’s lunch.
It’s at Cocina Del Charro, 1020 W. San Marcos Boulevard, Suite 50. A regular local restaurant instead of a hotel conference room, which feels like the right call for this format.
What’s the Cost? Your Meal.
No ticket price to decode. The Chamber says members just pay for whatever they order.
There are a couple of catches, though. You have to be a San Marcos Chamber member, and you need to RSVP in advance. Only eight spots are advertised, so this isn’t the kind of thing you wander into on a whim.
Mechanics Bank is hosting the October gathering. The Chamber’s listing also notes that its Membership Outreach Committee will help keep the conversation moving. The listing doesn’t show how many seats are left.
If you’re thinking about going, check the registration page before you clear your afternoon.
Lunch With a Local Backdrop
Cocina Del Charro isn’t a new name in North County. Its roots go back to Escondido, and the San Marcos location has become a regular stop for local diners.
Recent customer reviews paint a more useful picture than any polished description. Some people love the enchiladas, the service, and the roomy bar area. Others have been less impressed with consistency.
That’s restaurant life. Experiences differ, and a review isn’t a promise about what your lunch will be like. One August reviewer singled out the Enchiladas Suizas and chile verde. Another called the bar area inviting.
If the conversation stalls, there’s always the menu. A perfectly respectable backup plan.
Why Small Can Matter
Anyone who’s been to a giant mixer knows the routine. Quick introduction, handshake, business card, then someone spots a person they absolutely have to talk to across the room.
Eight people at one table changes the math. There’s actually time to ask what someone does instead of just reading it off their name tag.
Of course, a smaller lunch doesn’t guarantee a client, referral, or partnership. The Chamber is offering an introduction, not a sales forecast. That’s an important difference.
For a local business owner who’d rather have one useful conversation than twenty rushed ones, the format is worth a look.

Plates for 8 is Wednesday, October 28, 2026, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Cocina Del Charro, 1020 W. San Marcos Boulevard, Suite 50, San Marcos. Chamber members only.

Eight seats won’t suit everyone. But if the usual networking circus has worn thin, this might be a welcome change.
