Vista Sports Roundup: Mission Vista's Five-Win Field Hockey Burst |
Timberwolves win five field hockey games in two days, as RBV adds a shutout and water polo victory. |
Valley Center might be getting a little tired of seeing Rancho Buena Vista on the field hockey schedule. On October 20, the Longhorns handed the Jaguars a 5–0 loss. Sound familiar? It should. The teams have met twice this month, and RBV has scored 15 goals without giving up a single one. And here's the kicker: that five-goal shutout was actually the smaller of the two victories. The Longhorns Have Valley Center's Number The first meeting, October 6, ended 10–0. Two weeks later, RBV returned with a 5–0 encore. Different score. Same big, beautiful zero on Valley Center's side. Two games, two shutouts, 15 goals. At this point, the Longhorns might be tempted to keep a copy of the matchup on the calendar. Not every local field hockey team had the same October 20. While RBV celebrated its shutout, Mission Vista faced a tougher afternoon, falling 5–0 to Del Norte. That's two very different field hockey scoreboards. But the Timberwolves had another reason to make headlines this week: their runners were taking up five spots in the cross-country top 10. Timberwolves Crowd the Leaderboard At Avocado League Cluster No. 2, Mission Vista's Keaton Hawkins finished second in the boys race in 16:33.1. Cade Willhoit was right behind him in third at 16:52.7. Two top-three finishes would make for a fine afternoon. Apparently, the Timberwolves decided to bring a few more friends. Jaden Jacobo, Jett Van Alfen and Calvin Karchem also landed in the top 10. Five Mission Vista runners among the leading finishers is a team showing, not just one athlete having a fast day. And RBV's Marseille Veneracion slipped into 10th. The Timberwolves had company on the leaderboard after all. The Panthers Get Their Turn The boys weren't the only ones putting in the miles. At Coastal League Cluster No. 2, Vista High's Elena Sanchez took fifth in the girls race in 18:02.7, giving the Panthers a result of their own to celebrate. There's no buzzer to beat in cross-country. Just the course, the clock and a lot of determination. Sanchez gave the Panthers a finish worth noticing. After all that running, the Longhorns took the week's action into the water. And the scoring didn't slow down. Longhorns Make Waves in Water Polo Rancho Buena Vista boys water polo defeated Canyon Hills 13–6 on October 19, according to San Diego Prep Insider. A seven-goal cushion is a welcome sight on any scoreboard. Especially when the sport requires you to keep treading water while doing everything else. Back on dry land, the volleyball net brought a different challenge. The Longhorns learned that a big win one week doesn't make the next opponent any easier. The Freshmen Flip the Volleyball Script |
RBV's varsity girls had a rough stretch, falling 3–0 to Poway on October 15 and 3–0 to El Camino on October 20, according to MaxPreps. That's a quick change of fortune after their five-set victory over Canyon Crest Academy on October 13. Volleyball doesn't hand out extra points for last week's heroics. But the El Camino matchup came with a twist. On October 20, RBV's freshman girls flipped the result, defeating El Camino 2–0. Same schools. Different squads. And a reason for the younger Longhorns to celebrate. And that's a pretty good reminder of why we follow more than the varsity scoreboard. One team has a tough night, another gets its moment, and the younger Longhorns have a victory of their own to celebrate. Between the shutouts, fast finishes, water polo goals and volleyball surprises, Vista gave us plenty to talk about this week. We have a feeling next week won't be quiet, either.
