North Valley Flare Team

Oct 20, 2026

Hi, neighbors!

A little hometown pride, a fresh cup of coffee and a few good reasons to get out around Vista and San Marcos—we’ve gathered a bit of each in this week’s Flare.

Catch up on the decisions taking shape at City Hall, see what San Marcos’ new fire station will bring and cheer on the local athletes making their mark this fall. Then make room for a little stage magic, a downtown market wander or an afternoon of live music.

We’re stopping at Necessity Coffee in North City, sharing the story behind Mama ’n Papa’s and picking up a Farmers Market Find for your next snack break. Our dog-loving corner has a new name, too: Homeward Dogs. Meet Luna and Rex, and take a look at the local directory—your business may already be waiting for you to claim its free listing.

Pick a story, find a new favorite and share a little local good with someone.

Enjoy this week’s Flare! 🔥

Good Vibes. Great Stories.

Tuesday, October 20, 2026 — Your weekly North Valley Flare guide to Vista and San Marcos.

🌦️ THE WEEK AHEAD · OCTOBER 20–26

After the dry spell, a little wet weather may be on the way. The latest outlook brings showers and possible thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday, with a lingering shower chance Friday in Vista. The weekend looks sunnier and warmer. Keep a light layer and an umbrella handy, and check the forecast before outdoor plans.

💡 Tip of the Day

Make a “Try Next” list in your phone’s map app. When a local story catches your eye, save the place with one specific note—the dish you want to order, the trail you want to walk or the shop you want to browse. Next time someone asks what to do, you’ll have a few good answers ready.

When someone calls 911, a few minutes can feel like forever.

That's why a new fire station in San Marcos is more than another construction project.

The city broke ground October 5 on Fire Station 5, planned for the southeast corner of North Las Posas Road and Armorlite Drive.

It's a major investment in the growing community.

At the Wave, two fixes are moving forward.

At three Vista parks, new field lights are on the way.

And at City Hall? A couple of votes weren't nearly so unanimous.

Vista's October 13 council meeting covered everything from summer fun to statewide housing policy. The city's official Consolidated Actions report shows what passed—and where council members disagreed.

Eight parks.

Two different lighting plans.

And one proposal with a price tag topping $2.5 million.

That's a lot of ground to cover at one San Marcos City Council meeting. The October 13 agenda also included something you might not expect: equipment to give emergency crews a place to rest during long deployments.

Friday night brought three very different outcomes for Vista's high school football teams. Rancho Buena Vista gave its home crowd plenty to celebrate, while Vista High and Tri-City Christian found themselves on the wrong side of decisive scores.

For the Longhorns, though, October 16 was a reminder of what can happen when an offense finds its rhythm.

Friday night brought two very different results for San Marcos football fans. Mission Hills defeated Torrey Pines 31–21, while San Marcos High fell 42–26 on the road against Carlsbad. Both games were played October 16, giving the city's two varsity programs contrasting results as the regular season moves toward its final stretch.

Mission Hills Grizzlies Beat Torrey Pines, 31–21

Mission Hills came away with the result it wanted against Torrey Pines, finishing with a 10-point advantage. The Grizzlies put 31 points on the board against a Falcons team that scored 21.

Want to know who's making noise in San Marcos girls flag football?

Start with Miyah Holmes.

As of October 14, the San Marcos High standout led the county receiving leaderboard with 1,631 yards through 19 games, while other San Marcos and Mission Hills athletes were putting up standout numbers of their own.

That's a season total, and it's one of several impressive numbers coming out of San Marcos and Mission Hills.

Carlos Sanchez had 15 minutes and 31 seconds to make his mark at Guajome. He made every second count.

At the October 10 Southern California Invitational, the Vista High runner finished second in the boys 5K and set a school course record, according to information the cross-country coach provided directly to North Valley Flare.

Put down the to-do list. Pick up a pencil.

An October Sip & Self-Care gathering at Ascend Coffee Roasters in Vista offers a different kind of midday assignment: color, connect with others and write an appreciation note for a local firefighter.

A break for you. A thank-you for somebody else.

That’s a lot more interesting than another appointment to discuss appointments.
