North Valley Flare Team

Sep 29, 2026

Hi, neighbors!

October is arriving with a busy mix of community news, local sports and plenty of reasons to get out around Vista and San Marcos. This week, Rancho Buena Vista students are building tiny homes for veterans, while both city councils tackled decisions that could shape daily life.

Local teams are stacking wins as the fall season gathers momentum. Away from City Hall and the fields, we’re spotlighting Pair A Dice Games, tracking a new Mañanas sign in Vista, raising a glass to a Belching Beaver favorite and stopping by the San Marcos Farmers Market for specialty tea from Of Tea.

The weekend lineup includes live theater, planetarium shows, a Taylor Swift tribute and the San Marcos Fire Department open house—plus Phoenix and Collette, two Oceanside dogs ready to meet their people. Whether you’re catching up on the week or planning what comes next, we hope you find something useful, surprising or simply fun.

Enjoy this week’s Flare! 🔥
Good Vibes. Great Stories.

☕ Today is National Coffee Day!
If you missed yesterday’s special coffee edition, read it here for a few Vista and San Marcos coffee stops, two local stories, and a little coffee break.

☀️ THE WEEK AHEAD: Sunny and warm Tuesday, with highs near 82°F in Vista and 81°F in San Marcos. The heat builds later in the week, with inland San Marcos forecast near 93°F by Friday.

💡 Tip of the Day

For this weekend’s ticketed shows, buy online early and save your confirmation to your phone before leaving home. Palomar’s Friday planetarium programs often sell out.

Rancho Buena Vista High School students are building tiny homes for veterans.

Not model homes.

Not a cute classroom display.

Actual tiny homes, with walls, systems, tools, deadlines and the kind of mistakes you cannot fix with an eraser.

San Marcos’ Sept. 22 City Council meeting was not built for bumper stickers.

No single giant showdown.

No dramatic vote that explains the whole night.

Instead, the council worked through the kind of City Hall plumbing that keeps a city moving: federal grant reporting, budget carry-overs, park-lighting plans, massage-establishment rules and several community-facilities district annexations.

Vista’s Sept. 22 City Council meeting started with stop signs and ended up staring directly into the future.

Which is a very City Hall thing to do.

One minute, the council is talking about where drivers need to stop.

A few items later, it is talking about automated license plate readers, FLOCK cameras, privacy rules and who gets to decide how much surveillance technology belongs in a city.

What does it take to lead a team when the stands are empty? Coach Ariel Savage chose four Rancho Buena Vista players to spotlight, and their answers went well beyond game highlights.

Madsen Smith takes pride in long snapping and credits Cohen Chapin with making him better. Cohen points right back at Madsen. Henry Allen helps direct the defense, while quarterback Van Piercy studies what opponents show before the snap. Together, their stories offer a look at the teammates and unseen work behind Friday nights.

🧐 LOCAL FACT

The Palomar College Planetarium was established in 1965—more than six decades of helping North County look up.

Vista’s old Eriberto’s building has a new name on the wall.

And it is not exactly whispering.

A red-and-green Mañanas Mexican Food sign is now up at 901 S. Santa Fe Avenue, the familiar standalone spot locals remember as Eriberto’s Mexican Food — and, further back in the local fast-food memory bank, as Wienerschnitzel.

That address has had range.

Hot dogs. Burritos. Now, apparently, Mañanas.

Belching Beaver welcomed fall with a pint of Peanut Butter Milk Stout.

Fair enough.

Dark beer. Peanut butter aroma. The sort of drink that makes you consider a sweater, even while Vista continues to vote for shorts.

Of Tea

Of Tea brings teas from small family farms to market shoppers’ cups. Stop by to see what is currently steeping and ask about the leaves, origins and brewing ideas behind the selection. The changing selection gives regular visitors a reason to check back, while newcomers can ask for help finding a tea that matches their tastes. It is an easy market stop for anyone curious about moving beyond everyday tea bags and learning how origin, water temperature and steeping time can shape a cup.
