Vista’s Green Ribbon Has a Backstory. Solatube Has the Factory. |
Friday’s event puts a certification ceremony, a climate panel and facility tours under one roof on Oak Ridge Way. |
First, the giant scissors.
Then the harder question.
What does “green business” look like when the ribbon is gone and everyone is back at work?
That question gives Friday’s event at Solatube International more to work with than a photo opportunity.
“Resilience in Action: From Climate Plans to Local Action” is scheduled for October 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The location is Solatube’s Vista facility at 2210 Oak Ridge Way.
The lineup includes a ribbon cutting, a North County climate action panel and guided tours.
The Ribbon Is Arriving After the Certification
Solatube joined Vista’s Green Business Network at Innovator Level in July 2026, according to the city.
So the ribbon cutting is a recognition ceremony. The company does not need to wait until Friday morning to become certified.
And this is not its first Innovator recognition.
Solatube says Carlsbad’s Green Business Program certified it in 2023 for measures at its Oak Ridge Way and Cousteau Court facilities in Vista.
The newer listing is through Vista’s own network.
A change in program administration is not the sort of thing that sends the group chat into a frenzy.
It does explain why Vista is celebrating a company with an earlier certification.
What the Green Business Process Covers
Vista says its program examines how businesses operate. The checklist includes energy, water, waste, pollution prevention and transportation measures, followed by a final site visit.
Certification lasts four years before renewal, the city says.
Solatube makes daylighting systems. But one of the company’s clearest examples of changing its own operations has nothing to do with bringing sunlight indoors.
It involves pallets.
Solatube says it now uses reusable straps instead of plastic stretch film to secure pallets for internal transfers. The company has also described efforts to reuse and refurbish pallets.
Not flashy.
Neither is throwing away plastic after a short trip across a workplace.
Solatube estimates the strap change could eliminate about 1,000 pounds of plastic a year. That is a company estimate, not a verified total already saved.
Guided tours are scheduled Friday. The organizers have not said which operations visitors will see.
What Happens After the Scissors
Arrival and networking begin at 9:30 a.m. The recertification and ribbon cutting are scheduled for 10 to 10:20 a.m.
A climate action panel begins at 11 a.m. The event listing names Carlsbad, Vista, Encinitas and Solana Beach as participating cities. It does not name individual speakers.
Solatube’s Green Business discussion starts at noon. Tours follow from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The full-event listing asks attendees to register.
Meanwhile, Vista is beginning an update of its Climate Action Plan. The current plan aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions 42% below 2012 levels by 2030.
That is a citywide goal.
Friday offers a look at one business involved in the work behind the language.
