Vista’s Food Tour Started With a Very Good Lunch Habit

Carla and Linda turned restaurant discoveries into a North County business. Their advertised Vista outing puts a local twist on choosing where to eat.

Same restaurant. Same order. Same debate about where to go next time.

Lunch has a way of becoming a rerun.

Carla and Linda’s Local Tours advertises a way to change the episode: a once-a-month Vista outing centered on restaurant tastings.

The company describes its focus as independently owned businesses, with background about restaurants, chefs and the surrounding area included in the experience.

For Vista and San Marcos readers, the proposition is close to home: try a different approach to nearby dining without planning a trip around it.

The appetite you already have. The introductions are the interesting part.

Before the Tours, There Were Loan Documents

The founders are Carla Werts and Linda Piña.

Their business idea grew from knowing places to eat—and people asking them to share that knowledge.

In an April 16, 2018 interview published by MainStreet Oceanside, the women explained that their work as notaries took them around Oceanside.

Restaurant lunches became discoveries.

Friends began requesting informal outings, including tours for relatives visiting from out of town.

Those gatherings inspired the business.

It’s a refreshingly practical beginning. No dramatic revelation required. Just lunch, local knowledge and someone realizing there might be a business in the mix.

During that interview, Linda discussed hopes of expanding into Vista by the end of 2018.

That establishes an early expansion plan, rather than the actual Vista launch date. The company’s website now advertises experiences in both Vista and Oceanside.

Food With a Side of Background

According to the operator’s general description, tours last approximately three hours and cover no more than one mile of walking.

The company says specially selected food tastings and water are included. Alcoholic beverages and soda are available for separate purchase at the restaurants.

Guides also share information about the restaurants, chefs and surrounding area, according to the website.

That’s the advertised draw beyond the tasting itself: learning something about the places feeding you.

For locals, it’s an invitation to reconsider familiar surroundings. Knowing where a restaurant sits doesn’t mean knowing its story.

The founders have received outside recognition, too.

At Visit Oceanside’s May 30, 2024 Tourism Summit, Werts and Piña were recognized as Industry Partner of the Year.

The honor came from Oceanside’s tourism program. It was not a Vista award or a ranking of food tours.

One Detail Needs a Fresh Serving

Before booking, confirm the current Vista restaurant lineup.

The operator’s website still names Little Cakes among its stops. Little Cakes Kitchen’s own website announces that the bakery has closed.

The published lineup therefore contains outdated information. That does not establish that the tour has ended.

A replacement stop, next departure, current price and Vista meeting point remain unverified.

The company advertises private tours and lists 760-401-5968 and walkingfoodtours@theplate.com for inquiries.

Ask first. Bring your appetite second.

Little Cakes is still listed even though it closed? I’d want to know the current stops and price before signing up, but the short walk sounds doable.

I like that Carla and Linda focus on locally owned places. Hearing a little about the chefs while trying the food sounds like a nice afternoon in Vista.
