San Marcos Sports Roundup: Knights Sweep as Grizzlies Battle Carlsbad
San Marcos volleyball rolls past La Costa Canyon while Mission Hills flag football sees its six-game streak end in a close one

This week's San Marcos roundup covers Thursday, Sept. 24 through Wednesday, Sept. 30, and the Knights and Grizzlies both gave us plenty to talk about.

Knights Volleyball Closes September With a Sweep

San Marcos High girls volleyball delivered one of the week's strongest local results on Sept. 29, sweeping La Costa Canyon 3-0.

The Knights controlled the match from the opening set, winning 25-8, 25-19 and 25-17. The victory moved San Marcos to 22-7 and extended its home winning streak to seven matches dating back to last season.

San Marcos had also won 11 of its previous 13 matches by the end of the night, giving the Knights plenty of momentum as the calendar turned to October.

Knights JV Volleyball Finds Success at Ramona Tournament

The varsity wasn't the only San Marcos volleyball squad collecting wins.

At the Ramona JV Tournament on Sept. 26, the Knights' JV team defeated Mountain Empire 2-0, Escondido Charter 2-1 and Westview 1-0. San Marcos also had close tournament losses to Mt. Carmel and Poway.

Three wins in one tournament day gives the younger Knights a well-earned spot in this week's roundup.

Mission Hills Rolls Past Desert Vista

Mission Hills girls flag football opened our weekly window with a 40-0 shutout of Desert Vista on Sept. 24, a result that was not included in last week's roundup.

Kenzie Del Gatto completed 17 of 24 passes for 209 yards and four touchdowns. Kenley Imoto caught four passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns as the Grizzlies improved to 11-3 following the victory.

The win extended Mission Hills' streak to six before the Grizzlies met Carlsbad on Sept. 30.

Carlsbad Ends the Grizzlies' Streak

Mission Hills stayed within one possession Wednesday, but Carlsbad edged the Grizzlies 19-14.

The loss ended the six-game run, but a week that included a 40-point shutout and a competitive league game still gave Mission Hills plenty of meaningful action.

Mission Hills JV Golf Adds a Win

Mission Hills girls golf supplied another bright spot on Sept. 29 when the program reported a JV victory.

The team's post did not identify the opponent or final score, and those details were not available through the public results sources we checked. Rather than guess, we're keeping the recognition to what the program confirmed: the JV golfers brought home a win.

Crusaders Keep Competing Through League Play

St. Joseph Academy had a challenging week in girls volleyball, facing Foothills Christian on Sept. 26 and Escondido Charter on Sept. 30. The Crusaders fell 3-0 in both matches.

The results didn't go St. Joseph's way, but the matches kept the Crusaders moving through their fall schedule as September came to a close. For one of San Diego County's smaller high schools, every chance for Crusader athletes to compete and represent their school is worth keeping on our San Marcos sports radar.

Carlsbad ending the Grizzlies' streak stings, but 19-14 is close. Mission Hills flag football has had a pretty good run.

Nice to see the Mission Hills JV golfers get a mention. Hope someone can fill in the opponent and score next time.

That 25-8 opening set against La Costa Canyon is impressive. Seven straight home wins for the Knights is something to be proud of.
