He Met His Wife at Filippi’s. Then Came Mama ’n Papa’s.

The Vista restaurant’s 1986 beginnings reveal a family story with more substance than another “neighborhood gem” description.

A restaurant job. A future wife. A pizza business.

Fred Mozzani’s story had the ingredients before Mama ’n Papa’s Pizza Grotto became a longtime Vista restaurant.

He worked for the DePhilippis family at Filippi’s Pizza Grotto, met Lynn at its Escondido location and opened his own restaurant in Vista in 1986.

That is a more interesting introduction than “Have you tried this place?”

Because behind the menu is a family history that connects another Southern California pizza name with four decades of Vista dining.

And yes, we will get to lunch.

The Other Grotto Came First

Fred’s official obituary confirms his Filippi’s employment, meeting Lynn and the 1986 opening.

The restaurant’s own history adds that the DePhilippis family shared recipes, their menu and their blessing when he started the business.

Experience, recipes and encouragement. A useful starter kit for a venture that still required Fred to build a business of his own.

Mama ’n Papa’s says it has been family-owned since 1986 and that three generations now manage daily operations.

That current management detail comes from the restaurant’s account. Its founding year is also supported by the family’s obituary.

The year matters: 2026 is four decades after 1986. No exact opening anniversary is needed to appreciate that stretch of local history.

More Than What Came Out of the Kitchen

Fred died on July 11, 2022.

His family’s obituary describes youth-sports sponsorships, donations to schools and charities, and more than 30 years of Optimist Club membership.

Those details belong to the family’s account of his life. They give the restaurant’s beginnings a community dimension beyond feeding customers.

Separate records document other Vista connections.

The Vista Chamber’s 2024 Heroes of Vista page listed Mama ’n Papa’s under its Longevity Awards.

A city agenda also scheduled a joint City Council–Youth Advisory Commission dinner meeting at the restaurant for February 18, 2026.

The planned discussion covered the commission’s purpose, function and procedures. The agenda confirms the scheduled venue; it does not establish that the meeting happened.

Even with that distinction, it is a concrete local detail. No oversized helping of “community spirit” required.

The Lunch Question Has Answers

Find Mama ’n Papa’s at 988 Civic Center Drive in Vista.

Its official online menu lists half spaghetti at $12, half lasagna at $13.75 and a nine-inch one-topping lunch pizza with salad at $16.

For dinner indecision, the $22 special combination includes spaghetti, lasagna and ravioli.

Three choices, one combination. Diplomacy with pasta.

These are posted online prices. Lunch specials are scheduled Monday and Wednesday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tuesday is closed. Knowing that before leaving home is considerably more useful than learning it at the door.

For Vista and San Marcos readers, the restaurant offers a dinner destination with a documented family story behind it. The history starts in 1986. The lunch window starts at 11.
