Grumpy Brit Returns: A Vista Beer With Eight Years of History

Burgeon's October beer listing reveals an older North County story, while San Marcos remembers a familiar face at Churchill's.

A beer called Grumpy Brit is bound to get a second look.

But the name isn't the biggest surprise.

A recent October beer listing points to something more interesting: this Burgeon brew has a history stretching back at least eight years.

And a separate story from San Marcos reminds us how much local beer culture is about the people, not just what's on tap.

A Familiar Name From 2018

San Diego Beer News included Grumpy Brit in its October 1, 2026 roundup of new and returning releases.

It described Burgeon's beer as an English-style ordinary bitter with 4% alcohol by volume.

Sounds new? Not quite.

A July 2018 issue of West Coaster already listed Grumpy Brit, then described as an ESB at 3.9% ABV. The issue is preserved in Cal State San Marcos' digital archive.

That doesn't establish when the beer was first brewed. Nor does it tell us whether the recipe has changed.

It does tell us the name isn't a newcomer.

For a local brewery, that's a fun piece of history to find tucked into an old magazine.

What Exactly Is an Ordinary Bitter?

The word ordinary doesn't sound like much of a sales pitch.

In British beer terminology, though, it's a recognized style, generally associated with a modest alcohol level and easy-drinking character.

The Beer Judge Certification Program describes ordinary bitter as a lower-alcohol session beer.

That's useful background, not a tasting review of this particular batch.

We haven't independently confirmed its current ingredients or how it's being served.

And that's an important distinction when an old listing resurfaces.

A San Marcos Connection Worth Remembering

There's another local story connected to the region's pub community.

Longtime Churchill's Pub and Grille bartender Tony Dowson appeared in a July 2024 Coast News report about crowds gathering to watch the European Championship.

An English native, Dowson described a line forming outside the San Marcos pub before the morning's action.

A memorial fundraiser described in the original reporting announced his passing and sought help with funeral expenses and support for his family. We have not independently confirmed the fundraiser's details with his family.

The fundraiser was dated August 24, 2026. That date should not be mistaken for a verified date of death.

These are separate stories.

There is no confirmed financial connection between Grumpy Brit sales and the memorial fundraiser, so purchasing the beer should not be presented as a donation.

Before You Head to the Taproom

Burgeon has a Vista location called The Grove at 501 South Santa Fe Avenue in Paseo Artist Village.

But a beer appearing in an October roundup doesn't guarantee it's pouring at every Burgeon location today.

Burgeon's official Grove tap list currently does not show Grumpy Brit. Contact the taproom before making a special trip.

The archive can confirm a beer's past.

Only the current menu can tell you what's in the glass.

Had no idea Grumpy Brit was around back in 2018. Hope it makes it onto The Grove's tap list soon, I'd try it.
