Friday Night Lights: Mission Hills Shuts Out LCC as San Marcos Battles Oceanside |
Grizzlies improve to 5–1 with a defensive shutout, Knights get big nights from Mo Henderson and Sean Green, and St. Joseph takes its first loss |
Friday night brought a little of everything to San Marcos-area football: a defensive statement from Mission Hills, a seven-point battle at San Marcos High and the first setback of the season for St. Joseph Academy.
Mission Hills Defense Slams the Door
Mission Hills went on the road and shut out La Costa Canyon 14–0, improving to 5–1 with one of its grittiest wins of the season.
The Grizzlies scored fewer points than in any of their previous games this year, but they did not need much offense because the defense never let the Mavericks onto the scoreboard.
It was Mission Hills' first shutout since its 35–0 win over Quartz Hill in August and another strong showing from a defense that has been difficult to score against all season.
A shutout gives the Grizzlies something more meaningful than a comfortable margin: an entire game without conceding a point. In a contest decided by two touchdowns, that defensive performance was the difference. For local fans, this was the night’s clearest reason to celebrate—a road victory built around keeping the other team out of the end zone.
Mission Hills now turns toward a major league matchup with Carlsbad next Friday at 7 p.m.
Knights' Win Streak Ends in a One-Score Game
San Marcos High saw its three-game winning streak end with a 28–21 home loss to Oceanside, but the Knights stayed within one score against a Pirates team that produced its best rushing night of the season.
Mo Henderson gave San Marcos a big night on the ground, rushing for 106 yards and a touchdown while adding 38 receiving yards.
Sean Green was another major piece of the Knights' offense, finishing with 121 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Henderson’s contributions in both the running and passing games gave the Knights production in more than one way, while Green’s receiving total provided another bright spot. Those individual efforts deserve recognition even on a night when the final score went the other way.
The loss moves San Marcos to 4–2, with both defeats coming by exactly seven points.
That is a frustrating detail for the Knights, but it also says something about how competitive this team has been through six games.
San Marcos opens Avocado West league play at home next Friday against La Costa Canyon at 7:15 p.m.
St. Joseph Takes Its First Loss
St. Joseph Academy entered Friday unbeaten at 4–0 before falling 43–12 to Mammoth in an eight-man matchup.
The Crusaders had scored at least 38 points in each of their first four victories, including 60 in their previous game, but Mammoth held that offense to 12.
One defeat does not erase the four wins that came before it. The Crusaders still carry a winning record into their next game, with a chance to regroup after a much tougher scoring night. Their response will be the next chapter in a season that began with plenty of offensive success.
St. Joseph is now 4–1 and gets an extra week before returning home against Desert Chapel on October 16 at 7 p.m.

San Marcos gets La Costa Canyon at home next Friday. Should be a good one after both teams lost.
Was at the San Marcos game. Felt like they were still in it right to the end.
St. Joseph scoring only 12 after putting up 60 last game is wild. What changed?
Henderson and Green put up good numbers, but giving Oceanside its best rushing night hurts.
Mission Hills only needed 14 points with that defense. A road shutout is pretty impressive.
