Four Chambers Are Meeting at Palomar. The Room Next Door Is the Story. |
Tuesday’s mixer brings Vista, San Marcos, Poway and Escondido to the patio of Palomar College’s Trades Building. |
Business mixers usually begin with a question.
“What do you do?”
Tuesday’s gathering at Palomar College offers a better one.
“What are they teaching in there?”
The Vista, San Marcos, Poway and Escondido chambers of commerce are meeting on the outdoor patio of Palomar’s Trades Building in San Marcos. The mixer runs September 29 from 4 to 6 p.m.
The San Marcos Chamber identifies Palomar College and the Palomar College Foundation as hosts.
Four chambers. Two hours. Many names to remember.
At least the location gives everyone something to talk about besides traffic.
This Building Has a Job
Palomar’s campus map places welding, cabinet and furniture technology, public works management, and water and wastewater programs in Building T.
These are practical subjects.
A weld has to hold. A cabinet has to fit. Water has to go where it is supposed to go.
The San Marcos Chamber says mixer guests will get an “inside look” at the building and its programs. It has not posted a detailed schedule for that part of the evening.
So there is no confirmed tour. No announced student presentation. No advertised hiring fair.
There is, however, a gathering of business people from four communities beside Palomar’s career training programs.
What might they learn from one another?
That answer will have to wait until people actually meet.
For now, the building makes this more than a change of scenery. It puts the conversation next to classrooms where people learn to make, repair and maintain things.
One Mixer, Several Price Tags
Before heading to campus, check the registration page for the chamber you plan to use.
Vista lists admission at $10 for members and $40 for future members.
San Marcos lists those same prices for advance registration. Its listed door prices rise to $20 for members and $50 for prospective members.
Poway lists free admission for its members and $25 for nonmembers. It requires registration and says no walk-ins.
Escondido also requires advance registration and lists free admission for members.
Same event. Different rules.
Poway’s page even gives conflicting deadlines for when a late member charge begins. Check the amount shown when you register rather than guessing which line wins.
A new business contact is a pleasant surprise.
A surprise at check-in? Less so.
Find the Patio, Not Just the Campus
Palomar College’s address is 1140 W. Mission Road in San Marcos. Vista’s directions say to enter from North Las Posas Road via Avenida Azul. Park in the parking structure or Lot 12, then walk across Comet Circle to Building T.
The San Marcos Chamber says parking in those areas is complimentary for the event. No permit is required.
The chamber listings advertise food and two drink tickets. Poway and Escondido specify beer or wine tickets, along with water and lemonade.
The refreshments may bring people to the patio.
The interesting part is what they discuss once they arrive.

I like that they're holding this by Palomar's welding and water programs. Would be nice if the inside look includes a chance to meet some students. I'll check the registration rules before heading over.
