Dental Tools Are Only Half the Homework at Pima’s San Marcos Campus

The school advertises about nine months of dental assistant training. Before enrolling, look closely at the cost, credentials and career numbers.

A dental lab can get your attention. An enrollment agreement should keep it.

Pima Medical Institute is promoting hands-on training in its San Marcos Dental Assistant program. For Vista and San Marcos residents considering a career change, that puts a local option on the list.

But before picturing yourself beside the dental chair, pull up a chair of your own. There are questions worth asking.

What’s Behind the Lab Door?

Pima’s campus is at 111 Campus Way in San Marcos’ North City area.

The campus advertises a Dental Assistant certificate program lasting approximately nine months. Published training topics include patient preparation, dental radiography, sterilization and impression materials.

Pima’s general program description also includes a clinical externship. Specific San Marcos externship partners and placement arrangements remain unconfirmed.

The campus has some history. A November 2018 Pima article says the location opened in 2017 and identifies dental assisting among its offerings.

Graduation and Licensing Are Separate Steps

California’s Dental Board lists Pima Medical Institute San Marcos as an approved Registered Dental Assistant program, under approval number CA1004.

That matters. So does understanding what approval means.

Completing a Board-approved program is one educational pathway toward Registered Dental Assistant licensure. Graduation does not automatically produce a license.

California’s RDA process includes required courses, Basic Life Support certification, fingerprints, application requirements and an examination.

Unlicensed dental assistants can perform specified supportive duties under dentist supervision. An RDA license is a separate credential.

Before enrolling, ask which required course certificates, examinations and licensing expenses the quoted price includes.

Get the answers in writing. A cheerful campus tour is useful. It isn’t an itemized bill.

Read the Numbers Before Reading Too Much Into Them

Pima’s San Marcos disclosures report an 85% on-time completion rate for 2024: 44 of 52 students.

A separate employment table reports 43 graduates employed in the field out of 47 available for employment, rounded to 91%.

Those tables use different groups. The placement figure does not mean 91% of everyone who enrolled landed a job.

These are historical, school-reported results. They describe past performance, not an incoming student’s guaranteed outcome.

The same disclosure reports $19,582 in total charges for students completing on time in 2024. It does not establish today’s tuition.

Ask for a current written breakdown covering tuition, supplies, fees and any additional credential costs.

A Local Comparison Belongs on the Checklist

Palomar College also appears on California’s approved RDA-program list in San Marcos.

That gives prospective students another local program to investigate. Compare current costs, schedules, externship arrangements and licensing preparation.

The strongest reason to tour a campus is to leave with better information.

The tools deserve a demonstration. The financial commitment deserves equally clear answers.
